Portnoy: Tate Is A Douche Bag

2006-04-02 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 20 Comments
In response to a fan's query on the possibility of a collaboration between Queensryche frontman Geoff Tate and Dream Theatre, drummer Mike Portnoy unleashed a torrent of abuse on the aging singer, labelling him a 'two-faced douche bag'.

Portnoy alleges that Tate has been consistently badmouthing him to fellow musicians, including "his boys" [what is it with rock drummers and wiggerisms?] Chris Jericho (of Fozzy) and Eddie Trunk, accused the singer of being 'rude and insultful' and in a move that suggests his creativity is limited to the drums, announced 'his new name on the board should be Geoff Taint'.

"I'm tired of being politically correct...

"For the record, Geoff Tate is a two-faced douche bag. Since he has begun doing 'Operation: Mindcrime II' press, he has been consistently bashing DREAM THEATER and even me personally in the press... (why, I have no idea?). But I'm tired of biting my tongue when he obviously can't.

"When he was on Eddie Trunk's show [on Q104.3 FM] Friday night [March 31], he was incredibly rude and insultful [sic] when talking about me off the air to Eddie and [FOZZY singer and former WWE wrestler] Chris Jericho (he having no idea they're my bros)... Eddie and Chris were FUMING at him and Chris immediately texted me from the studio saying he was ready to body-slam him on the spot.

"His new name on this board should be Geoff Taint...

"Screw him...he's now on my shitlist..."

" he was incredibly rude and insultful "

man-up dream theater.

maybe if you didn't play DnD all day, your feelings wouldn't be hurt just because somebody says you're bad.

Mr. Portnoy, I believe I speak for a large number of music fans when I say get the hell over it.

Jesus, if this is how you react to one singer not liking you, thank god you're not playing in the modern punk scene. With all the in-fighting going on there, it would only take about a month before you grabbed a Glock and began mowing down every musician you could get a fix on.

I had no idea Chris Jericho could do anything other than break stuff.

I guess bashing the fu'ck out of drums is close enough.

the walls of jericho was a shitty finishing move to be fair (im talking about when some bastard uses it on you in a bit of a laugh-scrap, not when its faked on WWF (i quit watching before the F became an E)), i got out of it loadsa times when my brother put me in it.

i was the hardcore champ of the whole... well... the farm we lived on... and to be fair, i was twice the size and weight of everyone else....

...ah memories.

ok I see portnoys point....he also said two faced. So he had a reason to say what he said. Geoff Tate and Mike were ok with eachother because they played shows with eachother and even covered a pink floyd song together. So maybe when Mike heard what he was saying he was hurt by it, to think that he was his friend and to find out that he was saying shit about him that really didnt need to be said because we all know Dream Theater are way better than queensryche. So look at it from Portnoy's view, if your friend went behind your back and insulted you to others..wouldnt you feel somewhat hurt and angered? Go Mike!

To be honest, I have no sympathy for Mike Portnoy. He blows up easier than I do.

haha Dream Theater, while musically gifted, are mostly immature. Doubt me? Listen to the Commentary of Live Scenes. :-P "You can eat my ass and baaaalls!

So yeah, Mike, you're dumb. Get over it. Be the bigger man, jesus.

mike has every right to say what he said....also geoff tate being the pompous asshole he's always been should've kept his mouth shut because all he's good for is singing...if that. Mike did what anyone would've done...defend himself and also I guess he's dumb you know because he does 3 hour shows and goes out of his way to make his fans happy (/sarcasm)...show some goddamn respect for the man. If a friend said shit about you...you wouldnt be too happy either.

The only thing Geoff said "off air" was that he didn't want to talk about Dream Theater On air and that he he and him didn't get along. He's also said that they are two different band while Queensryche makes music and Dream Theater plays notes, which is a quite good statement according to me.

"For the record, Geoff Tate is a two-faced douche bag. Since he has begun doing 'Operation: Mindcrime II' press, he has been consistently bashing DREAM THEATER and even me personally in the press... "

Yeah right Mike, if he's constantly bashing you, name at least two things he has said in the press except for the statements mentioned earlier that was off air. The only thing Geoff Tate has said was that they didn't get along and Mike respond in words that could come from a fiveteen year old kid which says a lot about his personally.

Lame Mike, you're a shame for your band. Tate still rocks and Operation Mindcrime 2 is a great album. See you in Sweden this summer!

Portnoy is definitely not a 'shame' to the band. He's a little immature and melodramatic, but you have to remember that almost every video they have done was directed by him in his free time off the road - as well as the EXTENSIVE amount of demos and bootlegs he's personally produced and made available to the fans.

Mike is a talented man and musician and seem to be a real nice person that seems to do almost everything to pleases his fans, I admit that. But even though I understand he was hurt he could have kept this thing private with Geoff. Quite immature seen from my perspective to go out in public and dirt talking Geoff even more than Geoff dirt talked him (off air), especially when he knows that he is a liar when he says that he only have had nice things to say about Queensryche before. But I guess he might have some inner conflicts within himself, who knows, and these things can happen when two cultures clashes.
