Owen does other people's songs 2014-10-01 by dimsim3478 | 14 Comments | Chicago indie veteran Mike Kinsella is streaming the first song from the upcoming covers album for his solo acoustic project Owen. Entitled Other People's Songs--possibly a reference to Erasure's 2003 covers album of the same name--it will be released on December 2 via Polyvinyl Records and is available for pre-order now on vinyl, CD, tape and digital formats. Our first look at the album is a cover of "Under the Blanket" by Illinois underground pop punk legends Smoking Popes; a fair indication of what's to come on Other People's Songs as the album boasts covers from punk bands like Against Me!, Lungfish, All and The Promise Ring (the frontman of which was Kinsella's former bandmate). The tracklist further extends to bands like Depeche Mode, Blake Babies and Mojave 3.
The album was first announced on Kinsella's often nonsensical Twitter page, though it now appears that Kinsella was entirely serious about being "super excited to de-amplify / snooze-up some of my all-time favs" as his post claimed. Kinsella told Canadian publication Exclaim! (full article: http://bit.ly/1v57lMp) that Other People's Songs showcases songs that he loved in his teenage years, and that he "wanted to do in a different way and make them my own." The idea was suggested by Polyvinyl after Kinsella remarked that starting work on a follow-up to his 2013 album L'Ami du Peuple would be "mentally overwhelming."
Kinsella has a long history of covering songs as evidenced by almost all of the projects he has been involved with in his twenty-five years in music. With Owen alone, Kinsella has notably covered Bruce Springsteen's "Stolen Car" (reworked as "Stolen Bike"), Extreme's "More Than Words", and even songs from the Canadian teen drama Degrassi on occasion while performing live (seriously!: http://bit.ly/1thspgB). Additionally, Kinsella's pioneering "twinklecore" emo act American Football have begun performing reunion shows this year after their only studio album was reissued, and the band contributed a cover of Elvis Costello's "Allison" (http://avc.lu/ZHuQ4D) to The A.V. Club's "Undercover" webseries, although Kinsella sulked in an interview that people were mean about his singing in the comments. This was Kinsella's third contribution to the series, as he had previously covered Adele with The Promise Ring (http://avc.lu/1vxlDYB) and Jane's Addiction as Owen while at the restaurant Hot Doug's (http://avc.lu/1rLKJlr).
One could go on about his impressive(?) output of covers but beyond this, Kinsella is currently juggling his solo project Owen, the bands American Football, Owls and Their / They're / There, and his family life as a husband and father of two. On the downside of productivity, Owen has been somewhat inactive this year aside from sporadic shows and the aforementioned covers album; Kinsella was also absent from Owls' recently completed UK tour in support of their first album in thirteen years, released in March. However, Kinsella has been occupied with the American Football reunion, beginning with a secret performance in August that was advertised as an Owen show, and continuing with eleven dates through New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Chicago from October 10 to January 2, five of which are sold out. Their / They're / There--formed alongside Evan Weiss of Into It. Over It. and Matthew Frank of Lifted Bells--are in the process of writing their debut full-length, although Weiss has admitted that the band is intentionally casual which is "why we kind of all enjoy doing it." Kinsella said of the record in April that "Evan and Matt just started working on the first full-length like a week or two ago. Those guys are going to get the skeletons of a few songs and then we'll start practising."
According to Wikipedia, "the bulk of Kinsella's energy has been spent further developing his table hockey skills. He is one of the top rated players in Chicago's underground table hockey scene." This edit was made months ago and has not been corrected, probably because it's hilarious.

Well, this is a rather unnecessarily long article full of useless information.
The idea is that news can be more expansive than just "new song. Here's a link." The purpose of all this excessive information is for accessibility; sometimes peeps don't really know what's going on at the moment with an artist they like and this is just an easy way of collecting all that info in one place for the purpose of staying up to date. If the artist is new to you, this is a good indication of other stuff involving him to check out. This is especially true for underground artists like Mike Kinsella who do a whole lot of stuff but get little publicity for it. Plus, there's a bunch of links to interesting stuff that I'm sure people might be interested in (videos, articles, tour schedules).

| | | Mike Kinsella deserves this long article.
| | | I was almost intrigued by the Against Me cover until I realized it was sell out Against Me
| | | yea i mean i like that song but mike doing a reinventing song would have been amazing
| | | Mike Kinsella's twitter is as incomprehensible as Tim Kinsella's lyrics
| | | Saw Tim Kinsella once and be basically had a mental breakdown midset. He lost where he was mid-song then stopped and went.."Sorry, I lost my place because I was wondering what the fuck I'm doing with my life." Everyone kind of chuckled, but he was clearly actually sad and depressed. He seemed super anxious and uncomfortable. I felt so bad.
