damn
| |
Song's great. Hopefully this means we'll hear Eros sooner than I thought we would.
| |
is it too much to ask for a year without deftones?
| |
aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
| |
Oh yeah!
| |
"is it too much to ask for a year without deftones?"

| |
That was awesome. brb need to change into another pair of jeans
| |
they never really put up their best songs before the whole album so i'm excited
| |
Vocals remind me a lot of he is legend not gonna lie
| |
Sweet!!
| |
Not going to lie, it's extremely impressive!
| |
This is incredible. Eros lives!
| |
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo me likey!
| |
I really feel for the band and the story behind this song is obviously tragic. But the song itself was kinda draggy, shame.
| |
all song releases shall now be henceforce referred to as "surprises" in news articles
| |
IQ release new Surprise
Closure in Moscow stream new Surprise
please correct
| |
It's definitely a fitting title. A great surprise.
| |
sweet hopefully eros comes soon
| |
idk just made me giggle because there was that dillinger news article like Dillinger Escape Plan drop Surprise
| |
Song wasn't draggy at all. "Rosemary" was an example of draggy
| |
jesus christ that was boring
| |
I'm gonna be honest here, that song was very lackluster. This coming from a huge Deftones fan.
| |
Oh sweet Jesus yes
| |
song dragged like fuck at the end. i swear some of their slowers songs just involve chino chugging some ether and drooling into the mic.
| |
i really enjoyed this. chino is awesome as always.
| |
the "surprise" is that it's bad o wait that's not a surprise haHAHAHA!
| |
Song was great and everyone knows it
| |
That song was amazing! It was so powerful and is probably one of my favourites so far this year!
| |
I mean he's a good singer but overall the music does absolutely nothing for me.
| |
anyone else get a Rivière feeling from this?
| |
'anyone else get a Rivière feeling from this?'
That's exactly what I was thinking!
Song is great, though I think it' would've been better if it ended at 3:08 ish and just faded out. The rest wasn't needed.
| |
Not them at their greatest admittedly but better than most of DE and KNY as expected
| |
Love the guitar
| |
This was a great surprise. I hope this means Eros will be releasing soon!
This definitely could have fit on their self titled release.
| |
I'm stuck at work right now i really really wish i could listen to this
| |
I keep hearing Chi Cheng actually hated this album though. Weird.
| |
source?
| |
yes crowing source pls
| |
Song's better than anything off Koi No Yokan
| |
Sweet song
| |
It's not much of source for chi himself saying it other than the whole band has stated they hated each other and they were in a bad place recording eros. Chino has said they shelved it and didn't plan on releasing it because they didn't think it was good.
| |
But that was already known when they were
recorded it. At least for the most part.
| |
This is average. Really average, sorry everyone.
| |
well this song is better than anything off diamond eyes pretty much so fuck it just release it
| |
That's exactly what I said Pots
| |
lol,too many smile this week.
| |
This is average. Really average, sorry everyone.
uh oh objectivity enforcer in the house!!@
| |
nothing spectacular but solid as ever
| |
sounds like snw-era tones which should make a lot of people happy
| |
lol,too many smile this week.
i was just thinking that
the only way sputnik could possibly get any more overly spastic excited is if Converge throws down a song about smiles this week too,
| |
actually this is pretty good
| |
'It's not much of source for chi himself saying it other than the whole band has stated they hated each other and they were in a bad place recording eros. Chino has said they shelved it and didn't plan on releasing it because they didn't think it was good.'
I think you've got it wrong. From what I remember, Saturday Night Wrist was the album where the band was in the shit and hated each other, it's the album they don't really like and don't play much live. Eros is where they were beginning to rekindle their friendship again. The reason it wasn't released was due to Chi's accident. It brought up too many past feelings so they moved onto Diamond Eyes.
| |
@graham opeth releases the fourteen-minute progressive epic "smile"
| |
funny cuz saturday night wrist is their best by far and they probably think diamond eyes doesnt suck dick
| |
"@graham opeth releases the fourteen-minute progressive epic "smile""
lol yes^
| |
"This is average. Really average, sorry everyone."
6 inches is respectable, don't beat yourself up.
| |
The song is fantastic.
| |

I used to follow this band a long while back and I think you've got it wrong too. Chino and Stephen Carpenter have always hated each since Around the Fur and they just sucked all the other band members into their crap. Tbqh, they wrote their best stuff while in turmoil.
| |
^ which is exactly why the self-titled is their best album
| |
It's alright.
| |
I love that album as well. I mean "Hexagram" is so fucking good.
| |

And another reason you're wrong is they don't like playing from their self-titled because that was the peak of their turmoil (they walked out on each other in the studio many times). Saturday Night Wrist was like their kiss and makeup record and it was all downhill from there.
| |
S/t is incredible yeah, Bloody Cape fools
| |
Self-titled is so dark and heavy, you can almost just tell by listening that things in the band were at a pretty bad place. It sucks they went through that but I love the album, no other Deftones album has that particular vibe to it.
| |
Chino and Carpenter fist fighting in the studio. I mean you can hear the two fatties emotions in the music for fucks sake.
| |
He Is Deftones.
| |
China White Pony.
| |
'Saturday Night Wrist was like their kiss and makeup record'
The lyrics to Hole in the Earth beg to differ.

6:48 onwards. RIP Chi.
| |
It sure is wacky how no one seems to know the story behind Eros, Diamond Eyes and whatever happened in between.
I will say this, though; I have trouble believing that Stephen and Chino hated each other since the mid-90's and continued to work together up till today. If they hated each other since then, they would've walked away from each other before self-titled even happened. No one has that level of patience.
| |
So damn good, way better than anything from the last two albums.
| |
yes i'll take the medium deftones surprise with extra hype
| |
"If they hated each other since then, they would've walked away from each other before self-titled even happened. No one has that level of patience."
its called money
| |
I just want it to be known that I wrote that Dillinger article but the mods changed what I wrote and altered my title to "Surprise". Thank you for understanding in this time of turmoil.
| |
We believe you Xing
| |
Loved it. But you guys are right. If it ended around the 3 minutes mark, it would have been perfect.
| |
As someone who is not a Deftones fan, I liked this song. Agreed that it should have ended sooner though
| |
wow, awesome song!
| |
some of these read like lambgoat comments, go back there if youre going to shitpost
| |
meh this song is very, very average. the bass is surprisingly quiet
| |
Not gunna lie, but I'm gunna be honest here.
Gunna be honest here, but I'm not gunna lie.
| |
yea was thinking the same thing reading this thread lol
| |
Song is great. I don't get why everyone feels the need to shit on bands that have a reputation for putting out good music. Shelve the fucking negativity for negativity's sake pls.
And IIRC SNW was the album where everyone fucking hated each other, but I could be remembering wrong.
| |
well because in some peoples subjective opinions they don't think they put out good music is probs why
| |
Pots bringing the truth m/
| |
lol
i liked this song enough and i think the 'it should be shorter' comments are kinda wot
| |
Imagining the type of music I dug most in 2008. I would be addicted to this song and would be like 4.5 or 5 out of 5.
Now I appreciate it and really dig the guitar and overall melody, but it's more of a 3.5. Could need to let it grow though.
| |
agreed posty first comment
| |
Deef-Tones! m/
| |
Holy shit.
I played this at 11:00 pm, and all of a sudden I'm back in my college dorm room listening to "Beware" on repeat. There's a quality of older Deftones in this song that I haven't heard in a while, those slow burner songs like "Pink Maggit" or "Cherry Waves" or "Be Quiet and Drive" that carry your consciousness off to somewhere deep and lonely. Specifically, knowing how tragic this whole album is adds that much to it.
Good stuff, absolutely. I hope it means we might see a release of the full album.
| |
Song rocks. Reminds me of another one of their songs, but I can't quite put my finger on it. "Risk," maybe?

I'm the same way! I can't figure out which song this really reminds me of. I think it's either "Change (In The House of Flies)" or "Beware" for me.
(If I were honest, and open to flogging, I might also point out how it also kinda reminds me of Demon Hunter's "My Throat Is An Open Grave"...)
*runs*
| |
So Good. RIP Chi.
| |
Deftones can do no wrong.
| |
not bad
| |

They kissed and made up afterwards. It's well documented (even by the band themselves) that making SNW nearly caused them to split up. The self-titled has a darker sound to it because the band deliberately avoided making White Pony II, they've said that the attention that album got made them uncomfortable
| |
Great song, better than DE and KNY
| |
Great song. I wanna listen to the full album
| |
Awesome stuff, bring on eros
| |

Money speaks very loudly.

I remember reading an interview so very long ago that said a lot of that rougher sound had to do with Chino wanting to go one direction (ie. the shit they do now) and Carpenter wanting do a more metal based record. Hence resulting in fist fights and complete meltdowns during the recording process. Either way, I don't have the mags to prove it anymore so I'm just going to go with your word instead relying on my old brain hahahaha.
| |
This is great, such a chilled vibe.
RIP Chi, Chino's accompanying tweet with this made me so sad
| |
really digging this. hopefully they'll release Eros this year.
| |
maybe...
| |
not bad at all. solid as usual
| |
Yeah, this is great. There are a few parts that remind me of "Moana" from self-titled.
| |
it's ok. kind of what I expected
| |
Wow, this rules. Better than KNY...
| |
omg this is fantastic! rip chi
| |
awful song
| |
5/10 meh hard
| |
Way worse then the Dillinger surprise.
| |
Way worse then the Dillinger surprise.
| |
Song is honestly kinda mediocre...
But I think the lyrics are very fitting.
| |
Wow this song is pretty polarized
| |
nah its a pretty standard deftones song. this is sputnik so people like to be overdramatic when it comes to this band
| |
isn't Eros meant to be eh anyway?
| |
supposedly its their darkest/heaviest album
| |
huh...
| |
Cool song
| |
Cool song [2]
| |
i agree that this is a standard deftones song but i have always enjoyed their sound so i'm completely fine with that.
chino has some of the best vocals out there. his voice just bleeds emotion and i dont think anyone can dispute that.
| |
The guitars remind me of "By and Down" by A Perfect Circle, and I loved the hell out of that.
| |
Well i really liked it when i heard it a few days ago but now warner bros have killed the video :-(
| |
aaaaaaaaand it's gone!
| |
Not quite. WMG took down the video linked in the article but there are plenty other uploads of the song on YouTube. Just listened to it now, and it's par for the course for Deftones; in other words, awesome.
| |
Diggin' the guitar...the song has a nostalgic, ethereal quality to it. The melody makes it unique...with Chi in mind, it's a moving song. Hearing it made me remember why I love the 'Tones. Eros is probably incredible.
| |
We'll only know that when the album comes out.
| |
i dont get it. did TWM really put a copyright strike against Chino's own youtube channel?
wat
| |
Yes they did. Because apparently submitting your own stuff on youtube is in violation of copyright law.
| |
made my day
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mt9HgBVQY-A
| |
YAY! :D
| |
This song is fucking fantastic.
| |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CF5J-CU02Fg
video went down, try this one.
Also excellent song.
| |
Digging the guitar melody quite a lot. Reminds me of the White Pony era, and Chino can do no wrong.
| |
Dat guitar. I really like the general vibe of this and I hope it indicates that this album is coming out soon. Chino did say they were more likely to release it now after Chi's death. It was the last thing he was involved with creatively so it would be a shame to let it go to waste.
| |
surprise
| |
dang
| |
He got me good
| |
I just heard about these guys through a user list. Wow. That's some coincidence.
| |
Dammit thought there was a new surprise
| |
I just heard about these guys through a user list. Wow. That's some coincidence.
20k comments and you've never heard about these guys on sputnik
20k comments and you think two deftones related posts on the front page is a major coincidence
i am simply baffled
