Astbury Quits The Doors

2007-02-16 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 6 Comments
Riders on the Storm, the latter-day incarnation of The Doors, will continue to tour despite the announced departure of frontman Ian Astbury.

Astbury has stood in for Jim Morrison ever since the group's reunion in 2002, and has toured the world extensively for the four intervening years along with original members guitarist Robby Krieger and keyboardist Ray Manzarek. Astbury departs the band in order to concentrate fully on The Cult's reunion; the group is set to enter the studio next month to record their first album in six years.

Said Astbury: "I have enjoyed performing and sharing the stage with Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger immensely. I have learned a great deal from the both of them, and it certainly has expanded my abilities as a performer. This has been a difficult decision to make but I feel I would be holding them back as well as myself if I did not depart at this time. Great love and respect to all the fans. Thank you for everything you have shared with me...."

Riders on the Storm's manager Tom Vitorino confirmed that the group is looking at a "very short list" of potential replacements, and fully intends to carry on.

I didn't know Ian was with them. I thought Ray did the singing.
I'd love to perform with those two, though.

My dad went to school with Ian when he moved to Canada for a bit. A Cult reunion would be cool. This Message Edited On 02.17.07
