Ravi Shankar Dies

2012-12-12 by MO | 48 Comments
Sitar guru and world renowned musician Ravi Shankar has passed away in San Diego at the age of 92. The "godfather of world music" died after an unsuccessful heart valve surgery amid poor health in recent years.

Shankar was most known through his collaborations with former Beatle George Harrison as well as introducing the western world to the Sitar. He leaves behind a vast musical legacy and an impact made by very few.

I'm surprised my mom didn't make a big deal to me about it.
Pretty sure my parents were huge fans (yes we're Indian)

The great art he has created will live on.

By which I mean Anoushka Shankar, of course.

In an interview I heard that this guy was a MAJOR influence to Devin Townsend. Never really checked him out, but it's undoubtedly a loss to the music community as a whole. RIP

What an amazing guy. Heard phillip glass talking about him a few months ago. I'm not sure we realize the full extent of his impact on Western music. He won't be forgotten. Rest in peace.

One of his biggest influences in Western music was on John Coltrane in his later works. John Coltrane's later works revolutionized jazz.
He's help many other musicians too such as George Harrison and John McLaughlin.
He will be missed for the impact he's had on music around the world in multiple forms from rock, pop, jazz and traditional Indian music.
