IGN: Master of Puppets is #1

2007-01-25 by Jom | 29 Comments
Two writers for IGN Music have recently compiled their list of the Top 25 Most Influential Heavy Metal Albums of All Time. According to one of the writers:

Heavy metal fans no doubt have argued till blue in the balls about which Metallica album is the greatest. It's a tough argument, to be true, but after kicking all naysayers in the gonads, we came to the conclusion that the band's third magnum opus was easily their best. Why? Because it built upon and perfected everything they had experimented with prior. It's the album where all the pieces come together in glorious cohesion and it's the album that finally woke the general public up to the power and the glory that Metallica was born to spread.

The list is as follows:

01. Metallica - Master of Puppets (Elektra Records, 1986)
02. Black Sabbath - Paranoid (Warner Bros., 1971)
03. Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast (Capitol Records, 1982)
04. Megadeth - Rust in Peace (Capitol Records, 1990)
05. Metallica - Ride the Lightning (Elektra Records, 1984)
06. Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz (Jet Records, 1980)
07. Slayer - Reign in Blood (American Records, 1986)
08. Dio - Holy Diver (Reprise Records, 1983)
09. Metallica - ...And Justice for All (Elektra Records, 1988)
10. Motorhead - Ace of Spades (Castle Music, 1980)
11. Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power (East/West, 1992)
12. Anthrax - Among the Living (Megaforce, 1987)
13. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath (Warner Bros., 1970)
14. Fates Warning - No Exit (Metal Blade, 1988)
15. Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance (Columbia Records, 1982)
16. Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil (Elektra Records, 1983
17. Mastodon - Blood Mountain (Reprise Records, 2006)
18. Opeth - Blackwater Park (Koch, 2001)
19. Pantera - Cowboys from Hell (Atlantic Records, 1990)
20. Deep Purple - Machine Head (Warner Bros., 1972)
21. Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind (Capitol Records, 1983)
22. Ozzy Osbourne - Diary of a Madman (Jet Records, 1981)
23. Sepultura - Roots (Roadrunner Records, 1996)
24. Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime (EMI, 1988)
25. Scorpions - Lovedrive (Mercury Records, 1979)

Every slayer fan on this site is going to be bitchin' about how Slayer is at 7 while Metallica is no. 1.

MM8 will be happy though..

I guess any list like this is going to be relatively predictable. My personal favourite inclusions (and possible surprises) are #17 (mastodon) and #18 (Opeth).

They should have stuck to video games.

Even though I'm not a fan of Sabbath, they should probably have been number one on here.. also to include Mastodon, let alone on 17, is just ridiculous. If they wanted a more recent example Isis' Oceanic would have been a much safer bet.

Indeed there were questionable choices (ones I do not agree with), but this is not half bad.

Pretty predictable for the most part.

Yet... I'm surprised British Steel didn't make it.

They put 3 Metallica albums in the top 10, and only one Iron Maiden and Sabbath album? Pfft. Morons.

As much as I love Blackwater Park, it doesn't belong on here. And Awaken the Guardian is known as Fates Warning's greatest, so I don't know why No Exit is on there.

More sabbath albums should be on here, they were too influential. But I'm happy Metallica's 3 best albums are on here. Blackwater Park isn't very influential

They can't review movies or games either, so they get little credibility from me.

Well this is a list of the most "influential" albums, which usually are ranked by popularity among other bands and close fans, as well as bringing songs that will be remembered forever. Like Powerslave is better than Piece of Mind but everyone knows Piece of Mind because of the Trooper.

I'm not surprised Deep Purple is on it. It's the album with Smoke on the water. I quite like this list but I agree some are very iffy.

Of course a list of the most influential metal band is going to be generic. If you made an original list people of lesser known albums would bash it for not having such classics as (insert supposed classic here).
