Nightwish Auditions Finish 2007-01-24 by Steerpike | 15 Comments | As of January 16, the auditions for Nightwish's new singer have officially closed. The demo tapes began pouring in shortly after the auditions were opened several weeks following the firing of Tarja Turunen who had fronted the band from the beginning. With over 2000 demo tapes to go through, the group certainly have a long and difficult task ahead of them.
According to the band's mastermind, Tuomas Holopainen, the scores and lyrics for the new songs have already been written, and they simply need a vocalist who can match the music.
This is all after a lengthy break following the departure of Tarja, during which time guitarist Emppu Vuorinen released his first side project in Brother Firetribe, and bassist/vocalist Marco Hietala released a new album with his band Tarot. And yes, I only brought this up so that the fanboy in me could mention Tarot again and tell people to buy their new album. Buy Tarot's new album.
On a slightly unrelated note, the band has also opened up pre-sales to the English version of their official biography, Once Upon a Nightwish.

I absolutely HATE Tuomas Holopainen.
How about creating a new band under a NEW moniker? What an asshole.
This is not Nightwish anymore.
| | | I love Nightwish, and whatever they do with their new vocalist, I know that it's going to be good. Maybe not as good as the old Nightwish, but fucking great, Tuomas is a mastermind. Tarja was a MAJOR factor in this band's ascension to fame, but I'm sure that Tuomas has some tricks up his sleeve. Let's wait with the namecalling till their new album gets released. I'm really excited to see where it will go.
In fact, listening to Slaying The Dreamer right now.
| | | I knew this would happen. The whole thing is divided into two groups.

In regards to Tarja and their success, yes she certainly helped the image and marketing, but in terms of actual songwriting she contributed little if anything. She was very purely trained in Classical tradition, meaning she doesn't actually write, she reads sheet music and performs what's on there. Kind of like Japanese theater at that...
However, Tarja was such a visual and distinctive part of the band's sound, that you get some re-res who think the group should pull a Joy Division now that she's gone. But to anybody who actually stops and thinks, that's just nonsense.
| | | i didnt know Tarja got fired. Thought she left becouse she wanted to go for classical music.
No nightwish without her but they can always try. Im the kind of person that don't like bands that change singers. I don't like Sabbath after Ozzys departure cus i don't think it sounds like them anymore even though their good.

I'm not sure I understand the logic here. How is it not Nightwish without her? Tuomas was the mastermind of the group. He's the heart and driving force behind Nightwish.
And are you trying to say that you only listen to bands for their vocalists?
| | | I still can't wait for a new album, plain and simple. I love Tuomas's compositions.
| | | steerpike...well you see when i listen to a band for a long while i get very fond of the vocalists. like if king diamond isn't singing for mercyful fate it doesn't feel the same way when fate play right?
The same here, she was so important for the sound that i won't be the same again. can't be that hard to understand...
when jason left metallica i was very bummed cus' i really liked his way of playing tho he was no cliff...so no i don't listen to bands judt for the vocalistsThis Message Edited On 01.25.07

Fair enough, but one also has to consider the influence the departed member had on the overall songwriting. If Floor and Sander left After Forever, there might be a problem.
When Roger Waters left Pink Floyd, it was a setback but not the end. Roger was the better lyricist, but David was the better musician.
Tarja didn't contribute anything to the songwriting. She was at heart a Classical musician, thus her job was to perform and not write. The band have recieved over 2000 demos with very specific instructions of what they're looking for. It can't be too difficult to imagine that among those submissions, a star is waiting to be born.
| | | They're defiently not going to find someone as good as Tarja- she had the most beautiful voice. It's gunna be hard to find someone to fill those shoes.
| | | Nah, you never know what is going to happen. But there is one thing that bugs me, why did she leave?

Heard any After Forever? Talented sopranos aren't that hard to find. Tarja just had the proper haunting tone for Tuomas' Romantic/Gothic arrangements and compositions.
But there is one thing that bugs me, why did she leave?
The band fired her because she was getting diva syndrome. She tells a different story, but that's to be expected. Either way, the remaining band members have all stuck to their story that she was growing distant and seemed to care less about the fans than she should.
| | | Yeah, from what I've seen, soprano singers are a dime a dozen. And Tarja wasn't one of the best...she was kinda average. I liked her voice though...the sound might be compromised a little bit, but I don't think it will affect the band terribly.
| | | Tarja IS Nightwish.
| | | After Forever sucks just so you know :P
