Ensiferum Announce New Album

2012-05-23 by Kyle Ward EMERITUS | 49 Comments
Finnish folk metal band Ensiferum have announced that they will release a new album on
August 27, 2012. Titled Unsung Heroes, the album will be the fifth release by the
band and the follow-up to 2009's From Afar.

Regarding the album, the band posted on their Facebook page:

"A cinematic experience from first note to last , ‘Unsung Heroes’ takes the listener on a
journey of genuine light & shade, with the 16 minute-plus ‘Passion Proof Power’ showing
that when it comes to the epic statement, Ensiferum are very much in the front-line,
swords at the ready.

'We’ve tried to push the different aspects of what we do as far as we can,' reflects the
band, 'the sonic scope is wider than ever. The folk elements go further down that path and
the metallic parts will absolutely rip your face off!'

Once again, album art has been supplied by Kristian Wahlin, with featured special guests
including members of Apokalyptischen Reiter plus legendary Finnish singer & actor, Vesa-
Matti Loiri."

While the album art has not been released yet, the band have revealed the track listing:

01. Symbols
02. In My Sword I Trust
03. Unsung Heroes
04. Burning Leaves
05. Celestial Bond
06. Retribution Shall Be Mine
07. Star Queen (Celestial Bond part II)
08. Pohjola
09. Last Breath
10. Passion Proof Power

Unsung Heroes was produced by Hiili Hiilesmaa (HIM, Sentenced, Apocalyptica, etc.)
and will be released via Spinefarm Records.

Ensiferum - Unsung Heroes: Tales From Fairyland I

(luv u, Tyr)

Btw: Kyle, if you say "Apokalyptischen Reiter" you need the article so it's "Die Apokalyptischen Reiter" unless you say "Apokalyptische Reiter".

That was from their Facebook article verbatim about that band, so I'm going to leave it as they
say. I know a bit of German so I understand exactly what you're saying, but that's how they put it.

And goddamn the stupid news formatting.

I understand, just thought I'd point it out. Although it's not really that much of a big deal that people fuck up grammar in that kind of situation.

I like Petri and his vox anyway, but what's interesting is he's actually better live. Seen Ensiferum two times with Petri and both times he was great.

The time I saw Ensiferum the vox were swallowed by the instruments so I could barely hear him.

victory songs wasn't very good so :]

i'll still listen to this when it's out, excited to hear (the admittedly awfully titled) passion proof power since all of ensiferum's longer songs have been fantastic

Idk, I saw Norther live in 2008 and they were terribly bad. And that was at a time when I actually didn't think they sucked hard. But I never liked Ensiferum without Jari's riffs tbh, I just think his melodies sounded way more "authentic".

Interesting, both times I've seen Ensiferum, it was rather the opposite, if anything.

I think it's pretty much fact that the Ensiferum albums with Jari are way better.

I think all Ensiferum albums are pretty much equal in quality if I'm honest.

Idk, maybe for me they're all equal because I just do really like Petri as a frontman and I think he's a worthy successor to Jari. And really, these guys are one of the most consistent bands in the folk metal scene. Oh and Smoking Ruins off of their last one was imo the best song they've done since something off their debut.

Well, I never really liked Petri. As I have mentioned his riffs are too Norther-esque imo. For me, Jari's melodies just complimented the whole folk feeling of the band REALLY well. I mean they're still good, but to me it's simply not comparable. And their debut and Iron will probably always stay my favs of their discography.

Jari's melodies are more sweeping, memorable, and far more epic I think, but Petri does a good job still.

I agree with Wolf that Jari's melodies did compliment the whole folk aspect of the band better and with you, Crysis, that they were more sweeping. On the other hand, Petri does bring his own edge to the table and I like him as a co-songwriter. I used to really, really dig Norther too, though, unlike Wolf, so that's a big reason why our opinions differ here.

For me it all comes down to the fact that I'm listening to "Lai Lai Hei" right now and I know that Petri could never write a song this good.

Oh and a recent update from the Wintersun camp indicated that Time will be out later this year, and Jari also said:

"Stay tuned for bigger updates about the album (or should we say "albums", wink wink!)"

Wolfhorde

Yeah, that's kind of where I'm at, too. Also, early Ensiferum has a very nostalgic value for me. "Into Battle" and "Windrider" were my first real Folk/Pagan/Viking metal songs when I heard them on a compilation. I probably still have both CDs lying around somewhere.

Edit: Nice. I'm not as much of fan I was when the s/t came out but exactly because of the "melody-thing" I'll give Time a shot (if and) when it drops.

I heard that Time might be released in two parts, which would make sense considering how long it's meant to be. Don't quote me on that

"My first Ensiferum album was Victory Songs so there's another reason why our opinions differ haha."
Haha. Yeah, probably. I can still connect the feeling of hanging out with all these Asatru people, one crazy Finnish guy (irony) and being totally into this whole pagan/folk/viking stuff with the early albums. I can also still remember this pretty well, despite the fact that it was 6 years ago.

Haha, out of all my experiences with the Finns, there's always one absolutely wack guy in their group. Also, damn they can run when they're younger and haven't developed a beer belly yet. I used to play floorball and every time I played against them, they ran me breathless.

He was the only one we knew and basically everyone called him "The Finn" (Der Finne), but he was pretty cool for the most part and he was pretty good at getting our "group organized" (basically getting us to go to concerts & generally go partying - sometimes even 3 or more weekends in a row). The best thing was one of his best friends & band mates was a black Irish dude looking like Gimli which is also what we dubbed him. And hell, they could drink & eat, it was insane. But those were awesome times.
