This. Although I liked TML when it came out, after listening to it again after Take Care, I realized how painfully average it is.

Thank Me Later was great. It was less artsy but a fantastic pop rap record with that personal Drake touch.

I was starting to think this song was good, perhaps one of the better ones for the genre, until rihanna came in. Could only make it through to 1:23 or so. I do think the first part is fine. I tried skipping around to see if it would change - and some funky thing was happening at the end that I didn't dig at all. So overall, while I wouldn't want that piano beat stuck in my head, I can give this song a nice, solid, meh.

I think she kills it in this song. To me, Rihanna will always remain an artist who features better than she does on her own. She commanded "Princess of China" with Coldplay, and she has so many other classics she was in like "Run this Town". Iunno I'm expecting not to share this opinion with many haha but who cares!

Ehh it was more the lyrics than anything. I mean, would a girl really respond to Drake with the words Rihanna did? Drake's going to take care of her, fine, but then she's going to take care of him too? I don't know but by that point the song felt more like pop sappiness incarnate (everyone gets represented, etc.) than something genuine. Not even a thank you... I'm all for girls and guys being equally strong, but Rihanna just sounded obnoxious to me. Meh. Nothing really against her, 'Love the Way You Lie' is a great karaoke song...

Maybe if you heard what the song was based upon it would make sense.

Like Atavan said, part of it is the fact that Rihanna's verse is a Gil-Scott Heron cover (who's also sampled doing the "ha ha ha ha" thing at the end), but it's basically supposed to be telling a story of two fragile who feel damaged and hurt but agree to take care of and watch over the other so they aren't hurt again. Yea.

Probably my least favorite song on the album but still a good video.

@atavan and gabe - I see what they were doing - different lines of the original song - but I still don't quite buy it. That original was quite epic by the way. That's raw emotion for ya. The thing I have with the execution is that well, maybe Drake was showing some vulnerability, but Rihanna wasn't at all. Except for her line 'I loved and I lost', which was too little too late for me. Not going to call this a cash cow dance song reaping good musicality from the original without preserving the original's spirit but... I'll say that the song did not quite retain the original one's spirit. At least not enough spirit to keep me invested.

Yeah I sometimes try giving songs a chance. It's decent for the genre, I probably would have liked it a few years ago.
