Prince to Play Super Bowl

2006-12-11 by Jom | 13 Comments
Prince will perform during the halftime show of February's Super Bowl.

As previously reported by our man on the ground Thor, the slot during the most-watched television show in the United States has come under scrutiny since Janet Jackson's breast-baring "wardrobe malfunction" in 2004 led to sharply higher fines for broadcast indecency.

This past Super Bowl, the Rolling Stones were bleeped a few times during their three-song set, which [bleep]ed them the [bleep] off.

The 48-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee will perform at Dolphin Stadium near Miami on Sunday, February 4. The game will be televised on CBS. This year's event, held in Detroit at Ford Field, drew 91 million viewers in the United States alone, according to figures released by Nielsen Media Research.

It's unlikely Prince will have problems with censors from the network and the National Football League. He has become a Jehovah's Witness and disavowed the kinkier tunes that make up a hefty chunk of his discography.

His Super Bowl performance was announced on the CBS sports show "NFL Today," three days after he received five nominations for the Grammy Awards.

I think Jehovah's Wittnesses are hilarious. The JW church in my town calls their pastor their 'overseer'.

Hopefully Prince doesn't have a wardrobe malfunction...

They could always have Rosanne Barr sing the national anthem again.

This is where a bunch of drunk men watching sweaty muscular dudes chase each other around will comment on him being a homo, and the irony will never stop being funny.

They're completely out of touch with what the people who watch the NFL actually listen to

I remember years ago when I was very young watching the superbowl that the blues brother's performed at. They kept saying before commercial breaks that two men claiming they were on a mission from God were converging on the Superbowl, and to watch out for them. I was so young I really thought something was wrong.

ZZTop played that same halftime show as well, if I'm not mistaken.

mx: They don't care about the people who watch the game to begin with. They want the consumers of the world to watch the commercials and buy products. Prince could draw a crowd that brings in such people. Completely marketing, as always.

"This is where a bunch of drunk men watching sweaty muscular dudes chase each other around will comment on him being a homo, and the irony will never stop being funny."

Seems like you have the problem. Who said anything about him being a "homo". Also, when I watch football, I don't think about all the "sweaty muscular dudes", I watch the game, grow up.

"They're completely out of touch with what the people who watch the NFL actually listen to"

Well, millions of people watch that single game, not all football fans (not even close), and even if they wanted to get a group that would appeal to your image of the "average football fan", I highly doubt that group would be presentable for such a grand stage. Price seems like a fine choice, because who really cares about the half-time show any way.

^^ whatever dude. Last I checked, Purple Rain and Sign 'O' The Times were some of the best pop albums ever put out, without contention.
