Metallica & Rubin Hook Up

2006-02-16 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 22 Comments
In a posting on their official website, Metallica have given long-awaited confirmation to the rumours that they would be working with legendary hip-hop/metal producer Rick Rubin on their upcoming, as-yet-untitled release.

The posting reads: "We just wanted to let our friends know that we have been jamming, writing, just plain messing around and having fun in the studio for the last few weeks.

"Oh, and by the way, this up-and-coming producer guy named Rick something-or-other has been coming by the studio every now and again to listen to some of our new stuff and throw his two/three cents in.

"Since this Rick dude is new to all of this, we thought it would be a nice gesture to help break him into the music business by asking him to produce our next record. We're very happy he said yes! In other words, we are psyched to share with you that Rick Rubin is producing the next METALLICA album! FUCK YEAH!"

The group have worked exclusively with producer Bob Rock since their 1991 self-titled release. After the disappointing reaction to 2001's 'St. Anger' and Rock's commitment to spend much of 2006 working with Mötley Crüe, the band clearly decided a change was needed and recruited Rubin. Speculation began as long as six months ago but it's taken the band until today to confirm.

Pictures from the sessions with Rubin can be viewed at this location.

St. Anger had a couple good songs, but the whole album was really weak. Hopefully they won't write another Load/Re-Load album either, and I seriously doubt they could go back to the days of Master of Puppets.

i liked st. anger personally. but to date i haven't heard a metallica album i didn't like...but re-load was my least favorite.

from what kirk has said recently it doesn't look like they are going back to the "load" days. but hell who knows where they are going. i'm sure i'still enjoy it.

they are never going back to thier thrash days. they are more than 20 years older and thier outlook just isn't the same...

Rick Rubin wouldn't let Metallica make a bad album. He just can't!

Rubin's an awesome producer, but I don't know if even he has what it takes to get Metallica making a semi-decent album again.

I hope Metallica can pick themselves up and make a great record like we know they can.

This is Metallica's last chance to do something. It will be hard to make a comeback from St. Anger.

That was one of the biggest music dissapointments in my life when that album came out.

This is Metallica's last hope, and probably last album. If they want to leave a lasting impression on the world of Metal, and Music in general, they have to start getting their act together. I dont think it was Bob Rock as much as it was the members of Metallica that resulted in their downfall ever since the Black Album, but I hope this new producer knows what hes doing. I cant see these guys go back to MOP or RTL style, but I can see them making a great album if they really put themselves to the test and bring out their best

i dont think they need to make a good album to let a lasting impression on metal...with their first 4 albums is more than enough...but yeah i as a metallica fan am hoping that the next album will be kick ass

Rick Rubin's a double edged sword for me. I like what he does with System Of A Down, but then then there's the bland, clean-cut stuff like Audioslave. I think Rick is a very clean producer who tends to take the "mongrel" out of the music, leaving it sounding a little stale. Ah well, at least the production will better than St. Anger (which I really like).

Rick isn't right for Metallica. I say Fred Archambault would be the perfect producer for them. His kind of producing is the exact way Metallica needs to roll right now.

^^ They can at least try to do better and improve on the newer album that they're working on. It started as them kicking ass with their music, to just... blah, on St. Anger, the drumming sounds like Ulrich is banging on garbage cans, they need to get themselves up and go back to the old days if they can.

i just hope they have gone in the studio with a riff now, and lars' drum tech makes nicer sounding drums for him
