Disturbed Frontman Interview 2006-12-08 by Jom | 5 Comments | To say that Disturbed frontman David Draiman is opinionated would be a severe understatement. Previously reported on Sputnikmusic, Draiman said that he expects Disturbed "to be around for thirty years" (http://www.sputnikmusic.com/news.php?newsid=2014), and said that he wasn't a fan of Phil Collins-era Genesis despite covering "Land of Confusion" from Collins-era Genesis on Ten Thousand Fists.
Now, Draiman spouts off some more - this time with HardcoreSounds.net. Portions of the windbag's interview follow:
You really show some serious opinions on this last CD. What's the response you've gotten from fans as far as the lyrics?
Everyone's been really positive. Ironically enough, one of our most sincere moments, we had a sergeant major who just got back from a second tour of duty in Iraq. I guess he had gone on about 400 incursions, house by house, with his platoon. Every time before he went in to clear out another house or building, they would play our material from this record to kind of strip them of their fear and make them feel powerful. He actually gave us one of his Bronze Stars that he was awarded. He was like, "Without your music and what it did for us and what it meant to us, we wouldn't have been able to do what we did." It was hard to even accept such a gift, but he wouldn’t have it any other way. I don't know if there's any greater of a testimony to the power and relevance of these songs than that.
How is the third incarnation of Music as a Weapon going?
It's been going really, really great. Shows have been huge. The production's all coming together. Big rock show.
Were you surprised when Ten Thousand Fists debuted at No. 1 and you had your third straight platinum album?
I was very surprised. Shocked is probably the appropriate word.
Whose idea was it to record a version of "Land of Confusion?"
That was originally [guitarist] Danny's idea. He was watching TV one morning. That old video came up and sparked an idea in his mind. He presented it to the rest of us. We all started working on it. Eventually it turned into what it has become. I think [the song's] just as relevant [today as it was when it was first released]. The world has certainly become a more war-torn and turbulent place over the course of the past decade.
You've complained about people criticizing Disturbed on various message boards. What are your feelings on the Internet in general?
It's a necessary evil. It has its advantages and disadvantages. It obviously enables you to reach more people than you'd ever normally be able to without it. It also enables people to dissect your life a little bit more than they normally would [laughs].
Anytime any one of us goes out on any given night, the details are up on the Internet the next day. Any word that comes out of any of our mouths is analyzed about 50 different ways, depending on the opinion on each respective persons blog or whatever. It is what it is. It's either all or nothing really.
It’s my impression somewhere along the line melody became a bad word in heavy music. Consequently, with the rise of metalcore, is that why so many bands shunned guitar solos?
Melody is not a bad word with us [sic].
I think there was a shifting of the trends. What became the accepted forms of heavier music are the stuff that gets Headbangers Ball airplay. It became a lot more of what is typically known as metalcore. It's bands that play the rhythmic-sort of styling that didn't incorporate any melody but was a monotone-type of rhythmic-vocal styling. That became a lot more prevalent.
We, in terms of that conceptualization, don't even fit into that category if you look at what we do. Obviously, melody is still incredibly important for us, and always will be.
I think guitar solos are actually being brought back in a big way. For a while, post-grunge resurgence, there were bands like Soundgarden when the new wave of metal started to develop. I'm talking bands like KoRn and Limp Bizkit. They really kind of left solos behind. For a while they were kind of viewed as dated, something only '80s metal bands would do.
To be honest with you, I was never at peace with that [laughs]. I always love guitar solos. It's a necessary part of the art form. The music is still guitar-based any way you look at it. Letting the player go ahead and let loose a little bit is part of what makes it entertaining.
It's a pretty big interview, so to read on, click on over below:

If only their music was as epic as their ego.... *sigh*This Message Edited On 12.08.06This Message Edited On 12.08.06
| | | Love his views on guitar solos.
| | | this is one of the few interviews i've seen where he doesn't come across as an arsehole (although i haven't followed the link and read the rest), but as for his view on solos... if that's true, then why did they wait til their third album before including them?!
| | | ^ Good point.
| | | I like these guys but I agree that Draiman needs to stop acting so full of himself. I recall an interview with him where he was genuinely frustrated and confused as to why System of a Down (who they were touring with at the time) had sold 14 million records and Disturbed had only sold 8 million. First of all, somehow I doubt Disturbed has sold 8 million records. Second, System has two more records than his band.
