they've been playing a lot of these songs live for a while now, so youtube away.

based on what i've heard, it seems like they're trying to add a post-punk element into their sound. i remember The Whip Hand, Aegis, and that Trinkets song being particularly promising.

i fuckin love Teflon. Cotopaxi, meanwhile, basically just comes across as a bedlam b-side that they felt they had to release, despite the fact that it completely fucks up the flow/atmosphere on that album.

it's an alright song on its own merits, but it just doesn't really fit in on octahedron.

I'll probably have a listen, but I really haven't enjoyed an album in it's entirety since Frances The Mute, which I think is better than De-Loused, after that they just stopped trying to make anything cohesive, Goliath was the one of the only songs I really enjoyed off their latest albums.

Can't wait to see what At The Drive-In is going to do if they make a new album.

Lol I can't really consider any TMV album weird noisy punk.....a term like that fits At the Drive In's former style a little more I think. Being the most epic thing ever isn't the problem really, nothing wrong with ambition, its the fact that everything since Frances has either been out of place and annoying or confusing and boring.

yeah I can agree to that. Omar sometimes just drenches melodies and presents shit that just makes you annoyed, but when he hits, he fucking hits. I dont think he needs to be so over-the-top to make great stuff, I mean De-Loused was phenomenal and it was their most simple album melodically and instrumentally. The guitar work on that and Frances are so stellar

de-loused is the mars volta's worst album (besides octahedron of course)...if you think different you don't really get what theyre going for. De-loused is safe and accessible, the easiest album to enjoy for a casual listener, the reason most people say it's their fave and tmv have just gotten worse over time. Frances, Amp (especially), and bedlam are daring, challenging the listener sometimes with what could be termed too much dissonance and chaos, but id rather they keep on their route, if you want accessible prog listen to 3. De-loused is tmv spoon-feeding listeners so as to prepare them for the leap to a more sonically expansive experience, to bridge the gap for fans of atd-i with a bit of familiarity...clearly, thats not the music they want to play anymore (and haven't since frances)...move on...
