I was always a fan of their work, at least most of the mid to late 90's albums. This.... hmm. I'm just not a huge fan of change for the sake of change. If they wanted to experiment THAT much they should have pulled done it as a side project.

It's not really like they changed that much. Simply just stripped away some of the layers they once had.

It's alright, passable, but if they do another one like this I may be done with this band. It's tough to find anything on this album I actually want to come back and listen to. Nothing hits home except Haxprocess and Nepenthe. I have this at a 3.5, but it might go down.

I think the band will be going this way permanently. If you've seen any of their live stuff lately Mike's growls have gone down the shitter.

It was one of the only enjoyable aspects of the group for me, this probably won't be bad for most fans though.

The lack of growls has nothing to do with none of these songs being as good as "Harvest", "A Fair Judgement", "Burden", etc.

The album REALLY lacks any kind of focus. I would have been fine even with just a Damnation pt II, but this album sounds more like they threw a bunch of ideas at the wall and went with all of them. Gotta agree with MetallicOpeth, it's a decent album but there's nothing that really keeps me coming back. Looks like a 3 or 3.5 for now.

He's addressed this problem. I believe it was because he was using in-ear monitors.

Oh I know, but it doesn't seem to have solved it. I think he's just getting older and his voice can't take it.

I really don't like this. Opeth shouldn't be a 'happy' band. As odd as that sounds it's true. They are magical with the bleaker stuff. It's like an extremely good painter, choosing not to paint and deciding to draw for the rest of his life even though he blows at drawing.

I dig the album. Watershed seemed forced to me, more than this because he was trying too hard to put the heavy parts in the music. I don't know, I think dropping the death growls makes their music better with the direction they have been going. I loved Ghost Reveries, but this is where they should be going from now on. Just my two cents.

SteelErectedb4you8er i agree.

...youre all retarted for not liking this. its such a breath of fresh air for modern music. so what if it's 'try-hard 70's prog'. do you really want opeth to just keep recycling their music forever just to keep their fans happy? i feel like this is the kinda music mikael has wanted to make his whole life, but was just kinda afraid to coz he's been stuck on the death metal bandwagon for so long.
