The Man 1 Tom Morello 0

2006-09-29 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 17 Comments
Guitar hero and political idiot [editorial] Tom Morello was arrested at a workers' solidarity rally Thursday night.

Morello was arrested along with 400 other protestors, on the charge of unlawful assembly. The crowd was in Los Angeles to march in support of immigrant workers' rights amid concerns they were being unfairly compensated by employers in relation to citizens.

Speaking to MTV.com shortly before the march, the political prisoner had this to say: "In these political dark ages, it's important for us to stand up for one another. These hotel workers by the airport make 20 percent less wages than hotel workers around the rest of Los Angeles. We're here to express our solidarity with them, to help them unionize and to help them close the gap between their sub-poverty wages and the millions and millions of dollars the people who own these hotels make."

Morello, son of an ex-Mau Mau guerilla and nephew to the first elected president of Kenya, has been involved in radical left-wing politics on the national stage for some time now as a member of Rage Against The Machine and under his protest-singer alias The Nightwatchman.

Its a shame, because:
A) for someone Harvard educated you'd expect him to be a little more rational about his politically-fueled actions. I'll accept his views even if I don't always agree with them, but god, he'd know that the act of mass protest is really a meaningless pursuit of the democratic proccess and
B) His platinum-selling rock band by far outweights the way he benefits free-market capitalism over his piddling protest efforts to repel it.
and besides, Zach de la Rocha always made stuff like this look so much cooler.

I just can't picture Morello being radical when he's in the generic rock powerhouse that is Audioslave.

Yeah, it's also hard to picture him being radical because of his general attire. What with the preppy clothes and his guitar practically at his nipples. Anyways, I'm sure he'll be out soon. This Message Edited On 09.30.06

Ever since Audioslave came about I've lost interest for anything that Morello does. It's so depressing, knowing that he left the coolest band of the 90s for...well, you know.

I despise the fusion of music and politics. I also despise radical liberals. Because of a variety of past experiences, I'd much rather listen to extreme conservatives than extreme liberals.

Skrewdriver's later work sounds like an apish Body Count. I reckon that I probably listen to alot of extreme conservatives or even facsists and dont realise because they dont sing about it.

it was either that or Prussian Blue.

and no, Charlie Daniels doesn't count because he plays the "negro" music.

I don't care if musicians mix politics and music as long as they do it intelligently. RATM was the best example because it's much easier to fit a lot of ranting into lyrics-heavy rap-rock.

But this doesn't really have anything to do with Audioslave at all. It's just Morello being interested in what's going on, give the guy a break.

People with radical politcal views, in my experience, are the most hopelessly ignorant and foolish people you can meet.

When he was in RATM we expected this from him. Now with Audioslave it just dosen't fit. I mean, he has every right to express his opinion but wouldn't he rather do it through his music?
Anyway what the HELL has Zack been doing anyway, (if Morello's radicalism is nothing compared to his)

Morello has the same state of mind as so many in Hollywood do now. When you're in a position of great influence, like Morello is, the temptation to push your politics is unbearable. I admire those actors and musicians who choose not to exploit their powerful positions, whether they be liberal or conservative. When posed with a political question, they should responsibly respond "I have my opinion, but I'll leave that up to the politicians"

Gruge guy 88 is pretty much completetly wrong about morello. I would go out on a limb and say that social justice, is and always has been nearly equally as important to morello as the music. Thats why he does what he does. "' I have my opinion, but I'll leave it up to the politicians'" This is supposed to be a democracy(rule by the people), and by no means a politocracy (not really a word, but it means rule by the politicians) the fact that America has become the latter is why the world needs bands like rage to make records screaming out against the injustices in america, and foolish celebreties to say what they think. Without people like this, the general public can very easily do what your suggesting, and lay down for exploitation by the politicians, and the people who helped get them in office. It is absurd to condemn a celbrity for saying whats on his/her mind, or in morello's case actually doing something about it, when that is actually the duty of the people in a democracy. While I don't agree with Morello on all political issues I would suggest that everyone really give an ear to what this guy, along with alot of othewr people are saying, because they really arn't that radical. This Message Edited On 10.31.06

I just don't think its right when famous people exploit their powerful positions to influence the impressionable public when all they have is opinions and no real expertise at what they are talking about.
