Pumpkins hit the studio

2006-08-17 by Rage_Against_The_System | 13 Comments
Smashing Pumpkins have entered a studio with producer Roy Thomas Baker to record their first album since 1999, according to a new post on the band's web site. Baker produced Queen's "A Night at the Opera", which included their classic "Bohemian Rhapsody", and also has The Cars, Journey and Cheap Trick on his lengthy résumé.

In early February, onetime Smashing Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur confirmed to MTV News that Pumpkins bandleader Billy Corgan has been working on material that will, at some point, surface in the form of a new Smashing Pumpkins album. "Everyone knows Billy doesn't need too many people to make a Pumpkins record, other than Jimmy [Chamberlin, longtime Pumpkins drummer] — who he has [on board]," Auf Der Maur said at the time.

A spokesperson for Azoff Management also confirmed that Corgan and Chamberlin had signed on with the firm as Smashing Pumpkins, and that the two have been writing new music.

Auf Der Maur said she wasn't not sure whether Corgan had reached out to guitarist James Iha or bassist D'Arcy Wretzky to complete the band's original lineup, but she said she'd told Corgan that she'd be happy to pitch in if he needed her; Auf Der Maur replaced Wretzky in 1999 and worked with the group until it disbanded in 2000.

I want Iha back, he makes their shows what they were live.

*sigh*

According to various relatives of mine. I never went : ( But I will this time. Regardless of the lineup.

I really hope this album turns out good. I wish James and d'arcy were more involved cause Id hate for it to turn out like his self titled album.

I'm not very hopefull. Mellon Collin and the infinite sadness was the last great album Corgan made. Everything after went from mediocre to good

I'm looking forward to this... I CANNOT WAIT!!! But like many of you, I too want Iha there just because he rocks. I don't care what step they take, as long as it is good... i.e. not Billy's Future Embrace *hint hint

Well, I actually enjoyed Billy's solo stuff, so it'll be interesting to see what direction he has chosen to go for this time. I kinda hope it's not going to have this stupidly oscure concept behind it like Machina. In fact I don't want it to be like Machina at all really, despite it not being thaaat bad.
C'mon Billy, create something Siamese Dreamy, please

How will D'arcy ever play bass while trying to light the crack pipe that has apparently become her favorite "instrument"?
