Brian Eno States The Obvious

2010-01-19 by Iai EMERITUS | 31 Comments
Brian Eno is one of the greatest and most influential producers in popular music's history, but, apparently, keeping up with the general public isn't among his strong points. An interview with the BBC sees the shiny-headed ambient guru proclaim that, shockingly, people in the UK - and in fact, people in general - kinda hate Bono.

"Bono commits the crime of rising above your station. To the British, it's the worst thing you can do. He is hated for doing something considered unbecoming for a pop star - meddling in things that apparently have nothing to do with him. He has a huge ego, no doubt about it.

"On the other hand, he has a huge brain and a huge heart. He's just a big kind of person. That's not easy for some to deal with. They don't mind in Italy. They like larger-than-life people there. In most places in the world they don't mind him. Here, they think he must be conning them."

you should have seen bono singing Ave Maria with Pavarotti, like he'd be able to keep up with the master himself

I enjoy U2 now and then, no comment on Bono because I dont know the guy! People should quit bashing him though, what has he done against you personally? Of course the guy has an ego. Have you heard the Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby? The guy has a bit of a right to an ego imo.

Not really news, and people don't like Bono and U2 because they're tax dodging hypocrites

U2 are great musicians, and Bono has great intentions, but they love money/fame too much

I tend to give Bono's douchebaggery a pass because hey, at least that money he's putting up for charity isn't going to a cartel in Colombia.

It's also been statistically proven that 70% of white guys can sing in the same melodramatic way that Bono does. But he's the only one we allow to get away with it because Joshua Tree was pretty awesome.

I guess Brian Eno ranting on about Israeli war crimes last year is excusable because he isn't a pop star.

That said, Eno did great work on the Windows 95 startup sound so I can't really knock him.

My girlfriend's mum just moved into a new house outside Dublin and she can see Bono's house from her balcony. If I ever see him out and about, I'll be sure to let him know what a douche I think he is.

Also, Enya lives down the road.

Bono, Madonna, Brangelina et al: just give away some of your millions and go away.....It's a combination of ego & guilt. The spiritual rule is to give to charity anonymously, hence no ulterior motive.

That's because Bono doesn't give money to charity because he has a heart of gold. He does it to boost his public image. It is an inversion in the long run. Some artists spend thousands of dollars in clothes and hairdos that make them look sexy or badass. Bono just gives them away to charity (and then proceeds to make a big deal out of it) just so people think that he's a saint. He probably doesn't give a fuck about whatever cause he's supporting.

I guess in the end, at least some good comes out of Bono making himself believe that he's the best man in the universe
