Yeah same.
I don't think it will work, or at least not get the acclaim The Beatles: Rock Band did. Green Day
doesn't really have the history or iconic imagery of The Beatles. Even though the music was simple in
The Beatles Rock Band, the "dreamscapes" were super cool and all the extra Beatles factoids and
history added to the overall affect the game had. Green Day has none of that. They just have a huge
mainstream following. I think this game is more of a cash-grab that an intimate affair like The
Beatles Rock Band was.

I don't really know what to think of this...
I can play ANY of their songs on real guitar in 10 minutes. Sure the graphics look super however I agree with the above in that the beatles rock band had the incredible dreamscape sequences.
I'm definitley on the fence about this but oh well, seeing them live tomorrow :D

I'm not going to bother reading the plethora of power chord and easy song jokes because I can probably quote some of them verbatim without actually having read them.
That said, I can see why they went with this decision, but I question whether it was a good idea or not. I would have much rather seen a Rock Band: Rush. What really annoys me here is now there's a possibility they won't be releasing any of the stuff from Dookie and Insomniac as DLC for Rock Band 2.
Also, who else is thinking a Rock Band: Megadeth would fucking rule?

I think you rather over-estimate their following. This is the reason I can't take you children seriously when you bemoan the status of corporate America. You're completely out of touch with the real problems with the system and just whine that they don't cater to you.
First off, Opeth and Dream Theater are relatively niche. For progressive metal, they do have a large following, but they aren't going to sell very many units of a Dream Theater version of Rock Band as they would with a more ubiquitous group like The Beatles. When you make a product and put it out for sale, you generally would like a return on that investment.
Second, think about the general responses this community has to these games. Consider that it's likely a not inconsiderable percentage of Opeth and Dream Theater fans are self-important wankers who see the Guitar Hero/Rock Band phenomenon as the "death of modern music" based on doomsday prophecies of no one ever learning to play an instrument ever again because of the games, or who resent the franchises for reducing their precious music and coveted virtuosity to "nothing but a game." These people aren't exactly good customers to aim for.
Sadly, I feel like we'll all be having this same conversation the next time another one of these games makes the news. I'll have to draw a flowchart that I can just copy-paste and be done with it.

Making an Opeth or DT game is a even worse idea than making a Green Day game. All this doesn't even matter though, Harmonix is launching the developer store that will sell any fan made or label made track, so eventually some fan or even Roadrunner will put up Blackwater Park and every other non mainstream band that would never make money by itself.
