DFA1979 are no more?

Canadian drum-bass duo Death From Above 1979 have called it quits as stated on their website. Bassist/keyboardist Jesse F. Keeler released a message regarding the split:

"We started as a punk band with pop aspirations and we met every goal we set for ourselves. A few weeks ago, the album finally went gold in Canada and that was the final mark I really wanted to reach.. It was my goal to see how big we could become without ever compromising or changing what we did right from the start... And now I know."

"We played our first show in a living room on Long Island for about 12 people and played our last in the Calgary Saddledome for 12,000. [..] I’ve been in lots of punk bands over the last 15 years and I played every basement, squat, hole and alley from here to Eastern Europe. DFA1979 was the first time I ever really played on a stage"

"Over the last 3 years of touring, Sebastien and I had grown apart to such an extent that the only real time we spoke was just before we would play and during interviews. [...]That's where we got to. It's not sad... It would be more sad if we stopped changing and growing and kept playing the same songs for 40 years like the Rolling Stones. For me that would be a nightmare. "

You can head over to the memo section of their website for the full statement.

The band, which also consisted of drummer/vocalist Sebastien Grainger, first released their Heads Up EP in 2002 via Last Gang Records. It was followed with the release of their first full length titled You're A Woman, I'm A Machine via Vice Records/Last Gang Records in 2004. They finally released a collection of remixes and b-sides last year titled Romance Bloody Romance.

Keeler currently plays in the electronic group MSTRKRFT with DFA79 producer Al-P.

Pansies.

They have so much potential but lack so much effort. If it weren't for their music these guys would totally suck ass. : P

dammit. i adore them. seems a little petty and trite though, to break up a band for that. but if you and your musical partner are growing apart, then there is a point where you must stop. nonetheless, they should both have the, um, "strength" to handle that fame. how silly.

You could sort of see the two of them drifting apart so I'm not really suprised.

OMG. I just told my friend about this ( he loves this band) and isn't sad or anything about the abdn splitting up because he likes the music they have now. Now it may just be me but if AFI or something liek thta broke up, I would be literally crying in my pillow.

Shame 'cause they were excellent. But it's pointless to carry it on when you've drifted apart. At least we still have MSTRKRFT!
