Syd Barrett, original guitarist for psychedelic 60's-70's rock group, Pink Floyd, passed away on July 7th, 2006, at the age of 60. News of his death was withheld by his familyfor 4 days, until being released worldwide on July 11th. He is said to have died peacefully of a diabetes related illness in his own home. A private funeral is currently being arranged by his family.

Pink Floyd have issued the following statement as a band. "The band are naturally very upset and sad to learn of Syd Barrett’s death. Syd was the guiding light of the early band line-up and leaves a legacy which continues to inspire" source

Agreed about the borrowed time. Even though dying at 60, he still lived a life that most men wouldn't live in three lifetimes. RIP dude.

^The massive amounts of psychedelics he did in the 60's has nothing to do with his death. Psychedelics don't harm you psychically and the only reason they harmed Syd mentaly was because he was already a bit schizophrenic to begin with and I think the psychs just triggered the full blown illness.

RIP Roger Barrett (Syd died a-long time ago) : (

He was my favorite songwritter of all time and he continues to inspire me.

I was a little shocked when I heard he had died....
Just as I was getting into his music and early Floyd.

What a gun. Didn't even reach a fraction of his potential. If he stayed off the acid, he could have been a far greater legend than he was. It's just a shame you know?

Shine on, buddy. :thumb:

Hey, it's sad that he died, because he did start pink floyd and you're all gonna give me s hit for this but he sucked. I'm sorry but he's nowhere near as good of a guitarist than gilmour and he had no real songwriting skills. He was just a crazy a$$ schizophrenic mofo. Sorry, just my personal opinion, I'd be much sadder if Gilmour or Waters passed away.

I kind of agree with the above. If someone can point out anything substantial and why it was so that he did for music and rock music specifically I'd understand all the "genius" labels more. But I just don't hear it. People say he didn't peak or live up to his potential. That means he never really did shi.t, IMO. Except get out a long time ago and stay out. Hardly the stuff of true legend.

The annoying thing is now all music stores are taking advantage of this by putting PF on "Special offer". F---ing cheats. Also the Spheres DVD (I think thats the name) is only popular because of this. I loved Syd Barretts work for PF and I'm going mental at how sick it is for music stores to do that.

"Ooooohh I'm Virgin and Syd Barrett from Pink Floyd has died so lets take advantage and get all our PF things on show! (Even if he wasn't even in the band for that long)"

THIS IS THE WORLD, PEOPLE! CRUEL AND HEARTLESS CORPARATE PIGS! Waters did have a point on the "Animals" album indeed.

Apart from all that sh*t, R.I.P Syd

You mean the PULSE DVD? It wasnt on display because of Syd's death, it was on display because it was just released a day or 2 before he died. The DVD isnt popular just because Syd died, its popular because it has been delayed for the past few years, and people are excited because it is finally out.

Please educate yourself before you rant like that.
