Featured Release

Cabal: Mark of Rot
51dhiUEKeNL._SS500[1]
Genre: Blackened Death Metal/Djent // Label: Long Branch Records

Background:

Cabal is an upcoming band from Copenhagen, Denmark. Their sound is like a marriage between Meshuggah and Ulcerate with black metal synths. Mark of Rot succeeds because it manages to blend the varying influences into one seamless sound that mixes rhythmic riffs that are huge in sound with an oppressive atmosphere that transitions between black metal and industrial influences. The vocals, too, run the scope from guttural death metal to black metal shrieks.

I haven't done a review in a few weeks, time to get back into it. Gonna check out Reggie and the Full Effect + We Were Sharks albums. Also that indie album I remember Sowing pushing a little while ago.

wowee, look at all this black metal

The song I'm streaming from the Cabal album is good, but it's not my favorite. If the whole album opens up on Friday I'll change it to one of my favorite songs. Mark of Rot is well worth checking out.

Also, despite the stupid name, the Avslut album is some really well done classic 90s-era Black Metal.

Slow week eh

Willie
02.23.18
The Cabal album I have featured here and Conjurer: Mire which is like atmospheric semi-technical death metal (but it isn't out until 9 March)... If we're just talking about music that's already released then number 3 is the new Tonight Alive.

Gnocchi

If you’ve heard it, it counts Willie

Willie

Ha ha. Fair enough. You should check out the Cabal and Avslut releases.

The S. Carey is everything I hoped it would be, nice!

The SUMAC stuff is madness

TheSpirit
02.23.18
Avslut was pretty good. I didn't care for the Cabal album, but I don't really dig djent, so maybe I should have expected that. Didn't really think anything on it really granted it the merit of a "blackened" tag though.

Willie
02.23.18
The keyboards and the faster sections of a lot of the songs, I'm guessing.

AlexKzillion

I assumed the abbreviation for Denmark was DEN, so when that didn't work I looked through Willie's ratings and couldn't find it and then I looked through your ratings and there it was...
