After the release of Architects’ vinyl-only 10th anniversary edition of All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us, the feedback from it has left me curious to know what the overall consensus is here on Spuitnik. How do YOU consume your music?

Below is a questionnaire. Hopefully I’ve covered everything.

Questionnaire

digital music recording and playback from a computer

Car on Spotify or Bandcamp. My room Spotify, Bandcamp or my vinyls.

Hyperion1001
05.31.26
tidal on mobile and FLAC from bandcamp at home.

I have a sizable vinyl collection from back when I fell for the grift but I never listen to them because digital is simply superior in every way.

TheNewWhack
05.31.26
Cassette for hifi audio and Laserdisc for the latest live concert footage.

I primarily stream through Spotify and YouTube, though I know streaming services are flawed and aren't necessarily friendly to the artist. When I one day move into a house or bigger apartment I'd love to invest in a decent record player or something so I could pick up vinyls of my favorite albums.

jrlikestodance

Apple Music for streaming. Bandcamp for buying digital. Also a Youtube premium guy so I use this for digging for long lost dance tracks. Used to be a vinyl guy but I'm planning to liquidate most of my collection due to the space it takes up

spotify, too convenient not to primarily use it. i was big into vinyl way back when i first started seriously listening to music. got some sick exclusives from over a decade ago lol. love the collection aspect, just gets very expensive and you also run out of room. maybe in the future i'll consider it again. but these days i'd rather get a shirt to show my support. or a pair of socks or some shit.

budgie

usually with some mustard but i like hummus too

jrlikestodance
05.31.26
I'm a shirt and poster guy now because I can get more use out of it and easier storage. Hummus also rocks

Cool survey. I submitted a response.

Generally speaking I prefer physical media, but use streaming primarily because it is convenient. I save physical media and other merch for my favorite artists. Streaming is a blessing and a curse because I love being able to hear anything I want, but at the same time I miss the sense of commitment you'd have to an album after buying it. You developed relationships with the music that are much harder to come by now.

Tidal and headphones, specifically Bower and Wilkins Px8 S2 wireless

"I'm a shirt and poster guy now because I can get more use out of it and easier storage"

Yeah I have a decent CD collection and should probably continue building it, but Spotify is just too convenient. Very annoying though when albums randomly drop off of it. I just try to buy a shirt every time I see a band or see a drop I like.

Youtube premium would be nice but I have too many subscriptions as is

Futures
05.31.26
it's to the point where i don't know how to put downloaded music on my iphone dawg lol

Emim

Alt + F4

And if that doesn't work delete system32

Futures

of course!

Youtube is one of the only subscriptions I pay for but I don't really watch TV/movies that much

“How do you consume music?”
I boof it

FrozenFirebug
05.31.26
used to i would download it and hoard it but now my main hard drive is dead so i have to download it and listen to it and then delete it to save space
seems like a hassle but it takes exactly the same amount of effort as looking it up on youtube and finding a playlist that isn't littered with low quality music video copies or dealing with spotify's myriad bullshit

I actually dropped my phone in Lake Michigan yesterday and upon realizing I had no music for the car ride to work I dug around my closet and found an old CD that I burned for my old Walkman a while ago. MP3 quality was so bad (probably got most of them off Grooveshark) but it was a fun trip down memory lane.

Futures
05.31.26
dude shoutout grooveshark lol. at school the computers blocked every music site expect that one for some reason, everyone used it. jammed out on that so hard.

jrlikestodance
05.31.26
Grooveshark was goated. Impressive selection on there

Mostly my CD collection, I’m closing in on 1,000. I use Spotify because it’s really convenient, like it’s been previously mentioned and it basically serves as a way to determine what will eventually be added to my collection.

"You developed relationships with the music that are much harder to come by now."

This is a great point. I still probably remember all the track numbers from 50 CDs I had lol

i pretty much exclusively use youtube music now. great service

arthropod

I mostly use YouTube, sometimes other services in rare cases when I can't find what I'm looking for. But YT has lots of stuff that's not present on Spotify, and the drawbacks are less annoying for this service.

Every few months there's a long vinyl session, and I frequently blast compacts in the car. I sometimes play music from tapes too. Mostly using the streaming anyway, I save physical formats for music that's either inaccessible otherwise, personally special or by artists whom I feel like supporting.

arthropod
05.31.26
TL;DR streaming for convenience, physical media for emotional value. Using the latter feels truly special, something that the former cannot capture.

some cool responses here. i'll leave it a week or so and collect the info for a final sput result.

if you haven't already, fill in the form linked. it's only 10 questions.

Streaming for me has become a filter for the CD or at times, vinyls or cassettes I buy. Love collecting but vinyls especially have become expensive, so after streaming a lot some albums or artists I end up buying the albums I enjoy most. I also have the urge to buy more albums from a band/artist once I have 1 or 2 from their discography.

Spotify, or Youtube Music for shit that's not on Spotify. Completely uninterested in physical media when it comes to music.

cloakanddagger
06.01.26
I have a pretty big CD and vinyl collection but when I'm out and about I still use my 160Gb Ipod Classic brick which still works just fine despite being over a decade old at this point.

Groundking

Deemix for .flac rips and play my stuff locally, have 3 or 4 back ups of my library.

i still buy copious amounts of physical media/merch because i like to support the artist and having a physical keepsake. i don't listen to records as much anymore though because it's kind of a demanding hobby if you have an obsessive personality type. i got to the point where i was being so fastidious and obsessive with the record's condition and my setup the hobby became unenjoyable. pair that with the culture industry that's been created by record flippers and scalpers, i almost stopped listening to my collection entirely. i recently started again and am just trying to ignore my obsessive tendencies and enjoy the music but it's hard as stupid as all of that sounds. so i mostly listen to my ipod or spotify. within the last couple of years i've also amassed a decent collection of tapes i play on a thrifted boombox. that's clean livin

Great idea Gonz. I answered the questionary but Spotify while on the run or working, vinyl at home. I don't buy CDs anymore, I think vinyl just reminds me of my childhood so that's why is so enticing for me.

I use Spotify and Bandcamp heavily but will snag digital copies relatively frequently and physical copies somewhat less frequently. I also sometimes use YouTube for hard to find albums, shoutout Damaar lol

Such a great topic.
Getting close to 1,000 CDs, but I grab vinyl LPs if the price is "reasonable". I use Spotify for anything new as a way of window shopping; Bandcamp for a lot of artists that may not produce physical media. I definitely miss that relational aspect of "needing" to acquire a physical copy of your music and making the most out of your well-spent money.

Very much against the corporate approach of "you will own nothing and be happy with it" in the music/videogame/movie/younameit industry. There is no guarantee that Spotify/Netflix/Steam will be here in 10 years. If your ownership of something that you paid for with your money is beholden to a company's existence, then you don't really own it.

85% of my music consumption is digital and the rest is through CDs when I'm in my car. Coincidentally I just ordered a vinyl record player with the intention of building a physical collection. However, most of the music I listen to happens while I'm at work. I have a Revanced version of YT Music (or Morphe since Revanced is nearly defunct) which suits me well.

Thing is, I grew up in a fairly poor family so being able to purchase CDs was reserved for holiday and birthday presents so I had a paltry collection of cassettes and CDs by the time I went to college. At that point I torrented nearly all my music (got 1 or 2 C&Ds for that) until streaming became more viable. Bandcamp has been amazing in terms of being able to buy high-quality digital copies.

Good player and earbuds while on a bike and traveling.
Good sound card and monitor speakers at home.
Over-ear headphones at work and sometimes at home if I've got time to fully enjoy sound.
320kbps/flac all the way.

Bandcamp only to check new stuff out.

didn't see this, submitted mine. my view of the music industry is exclusively from an underground perspective, but its still cutthroat either way.

Now that I've got my vinyl system set up, my responses on this are already dated. I'm slowly migrating towards a physical collection now that I realized how good some stuff on vinyl actually sounds compared to digital.

Music is delicious if you sautee it simply: with some minced garilc and olive oil

with some pecorino romano sprinkled on top after the fact

Goes great as a side
