The recent increased focus on metal (intentional or not!) is probably better for Sputnik's brand/typical audience, but it tends to mean that there are fewer items of interest included in the list for my personal taste. Not a complaint - as I say, I think it's probably better for the site - just not my preference!

I don't think Sput has ever been excessively metal, considering pop trumps charts every year

'I don't think Sput has ever been excessively metal, considering pop trumps charts every year'

Sput has definitely become more metal-orientated, yeah other genres are represented but it is often pretty surface level for the most part, save for a couple of other niches. Fair enough if the community warrants that approach. Personally I like being challenged to find new things, which I am finding is increasingly more effort as time goes by. I remember when I first came here I could just check out whatever was being bumped/on the front page and call it a day, lol.

sput is definitely not as metal oriented as it was way back in the day

What era we talking here Project? I have only been here just over 3 years.

Since I'm old as shit, I'm something of a site historian. After the site transitioned off of mxtabs in 2006, the site's musical taste was predominantly metal and post-hardcore, with a small indie-rock niche. By 2010, the balance was fairly equal and I think it's safe to argue that the longer time has gone on the more pop-oriented we've became, culminating in our choice for Charli XCX to garner the #1 spot on the 2020 AOTY list. I think we're only just now starting to witness a slight adjustment towards the center again. I'd argue that we're still very much a pop/indie-rock leaning website just as we've been for the better part of the last decade. We've had some recent staff hires that have helped to shift things towards heavier music, and the fact that Nocte and Dewi now run this weekly piece means that the sources they draw from may skew that way whereas from 2015-2020 mine leaned into indie/rock/pop. Everything is still being fairly represented, but variance is inevitable based on whoever is behind the research that goes into this content. Personally I like it; I've never enjoyed more metal than I have in 2021 and I hope it continues.

It's been said before but the Staff team doesn't necessarily reflect the user base. The user charts lean very metal, though not exclusively metal.

Voivod
06.30.21
New Desperate Journalist, will check, missed their previous one.

Btw, Sepiroth will be released on July 9.

Demon you made me realize that I've been here, or at least lurking, for 10 years or so, and i just felt my bones ache

Demon of the Fall

@Sowing: ah right thanks for the history, good to know. Yeah I think people sometimes see what they want to see, I probably see metal metal metal because metal is an interest of mine whereas indie, indie folk, pop etc. a lot less so, I imagine it passes me by somewhat. I do like a bit of post-hardcore mind.

Still waiting for trip-hop to take over the site…

Sowing
06.30.21
nightbringer made a good point too, which was that what the site promotes on the staff year-end list does not necessarily represent the majority of users. The user population has a loyal metal base which has kept this site as a safe haven for the genre for many, many years. Even as we crown Kacey Musgraves and Charli XCX from the staff level, the year-by-year charts do not lie. So when I was speaking about our shift from metal/hardcore to indie/pop over the course of the website's history, I was speaking more to the perception we give off to sites like Metacritic and other aggregate sites that disproportionately weight staff reviews and staff-curated year-end lists. From that perspective, I think what I said is accurate - otherwise, what nightbringer said is true in that while we've broadened our scope to be a lot more inclusive of various genres, metal is still this site's heartbeat.

Oops, that looks like my error Voivod. Will have to make sure it’s rectified for next week.

Who would think there were so many black metal and death metal bands out there that basically all sound the same
