Fear not everybody, your second favorite weekly blog (Dev does run a mean ‘New Releases’ post, after all) has returned following a week’s rest over Easter. In its place was the staff’s quarterly mixtape (brilliantly compiled by Jom), which can still be listened to in all of its glory by clicking here.

Today, I thought I would chat about something that is very dear to my heart: Guilty pleasures. In all honesty, I dislike the term… Mainly because no-one should really feel guilty for liking any kind of music. If you like it, you like it… And it should be as simple as that. But, of course, life doesn’t usually work out that way, and there’s always someone just around the corner laughing at you for listening to a certain song, before they abruptly snap that “Your taste in music sux”. Sometimes, this so-called fact comes as a shocking revelation, but most of the time we are actually in on the joke and are listening to something purely because we enjoy it.

Over the past couple of weeks, I posted twenty videos from the Soundwave festival which I attended last month. While I probably wouldn’t say that they were the best act I saw, the one which gave me the most enjoyment may well have been Papa Roach. Now I know that some of their releases are just plain crap (see my two star review of their sixth LP ‘Metamorphosis’), but songs such as ‘Scars’, ‘To Be Loved’ and ‘Last Resort’ being belted out live were fun personified.

In many cases, these guilty pleasures will be formed out of one’s personal experiences… Many of which will be nostalgic in one way, shape or form. Maybe it was a gateway band that got you into a certain genre of music. It could have been an artist whose music just happened to inspire you at the right place and time. Or you might just enjoy music that we know is rather bad sometimes. Heaven knows, some people think that everything I listen to is bad! But who can’t resist a little bit of “Nookie” on occasions:

Other popular examples of guilty pleasures may include female pop (basically everything that’s been on the charts for the past five years), boy bands (or girl bands, in the case of The Spice Girls), A.O.R (a.k.a. dad rock), and the all-encompassing one-hit wonder artists such as Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Vanilla Ice, a-ha, and possibly even this monstrosity:

You guys know the drill by now: What are your guilty pleasures? Whether it be a particular song or a musician in general, please don’t be shy… Let us know who you enjoy listening to, but feel just a little guilty doing so. I’m fairly certain that your reputation will remain intact and, at the very least, you won’t be able to hear us laughing at you from behind our computer screens.

As they say at the end of those dreaded English essays: DISCUSS…..

Katy Perry - Teenage Dream
I'm not sure why I like that song so much. I love her nasally voice and falsetto. The song just makes you feel good.

DaveyBoy
04.08.15
Gameofmetal, you are indeed guilty.

acad, I really wanted to include that vid... But I couldn't resist the nookie joke.

@davey I commented mine, it's 3 places after my first. I'm a sucker for Rollin and Boiler.

DaveyBoy

You beat me to it TunaBoy.

You know, as I was writing this column, I was trying to calculate which female pop singer would garner the most votes. Taylor Swift automatically gets one because Sowing is obsessed. I thought Kelly Clarkson may get 1 or 2, but I knew Katy Perry would be up there too. I can take a few of her songs, like Teenage Dream... But man, she sings some garbage too.

CalculatingInfinity
04.08.15
@Davey: If you like this song, check out All That We Have Now (this is not on it, but is the best song to show a starter): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Gu_Hwnvp5U

DaveyBoy
04.08.15
CI, I had a listen to ''Virtue & Vice'. The music is mostly bearable, but the vocals are abominable... If the clean vocals in the chorus weren't, ummm, electrified, then I probably wouldn't mind it. Hmmm, not exactly a pleasure in my book, but to each their own.

What do you mean by Katy Perry being "tasteless"?

DaveyBoy
04.08.15
Well said Arcade. It's the most astute comment you've ever made. Welcome to Staff.

CalculatingInfinity
04.08.15
Main reason why people don't like the band, you're definately not alone in that judgement. Personally I think it's awesome but meh. What I mean by Katy Perry being tasteless is just how unashamedly tacky her music/videos are (except her ballads where she's as boring as watching paint dry). Like in California Girls all sense of restraint and taste go out the window, the video is so peverted and dumb, the song is just obscenely catchy. Then you have Dark Horse's video which is just using the astestic of ancient Egypt for no reason. Hell just that grin when she has Anubis' Eye holding the a crystal is so stupid I can't help but laugh.

DaveyBoy
04.08.15
Got you re: Katy Perry. She's borderline camp in a sense. The way it comes off is that it's intentional and she's in on the joke per se, so I can see how you kinda like that about her.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas [2]. I think they're awful but they make the themes to tv shows, and that attachment and nostalgia brings me back every time. Music can be truly horrendous and I'll still listen to it if I'm involved in the story. As far as music reviewing go, I really don't listen to most music critically enough, switching off is too easy. Here's a prime example, the single worst guitar riff I've ever heard in a track (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38ldTQ1bc4A), and yet I've listened to this countless times and still regularly get cravings. I would argue against the "guilty" label like many people here are, but I feel legitimately guilty about loving the atrocity I linked there.

It doesn't necessarily have to be from nostalgia though. I'll still often listen to Trivium primarily because I really enjoy playing some of their songs on guitar. Same is true of Journal, weaker Arsis tracks, Mutiny Within. I'll also bump some 50 Cent every now and then just because those bombastic samples really burrow into my head, nothing can beat 'In Da Club' maxed out on shitty stock car speakers.

AmericanFlagAsh
04.08.15
Yeah, Katy is "tasteless" for sure haha. And Peacock is bad agreed. Ur So Gay is ultimate worst. One day she is kind of trying to be meaningful (Fireworks) and the next day she is putting whipped cream on her boobs (California Gurls)

CalculatingInfinity

@Come: Oh dear fucking god not that Berserk opening, worst opening riff/guitar tone ever.

DaveyBoy
04.08.15
Grouplove is fairly well regarded though eddie, so you shouldn't feel that guilty.

They make themes to tv shows? Like those screwed up Japanese game shows? Having looked at that YT link, I'm presuming you're a fan of all things Japanese Daddy.

Good point on listening to something you enjoy playing yourself. And another great example with 'In da Club'. Does Mr. Jackson classify as a one-hit wonder?

CalculatingInfinity

Alrighty, I feel like suddenly throwing this out here: Avril Lavigne. Clearly, she isn't that deep of a composer and she's put out material which made me contemplate getting pronged by a cybernetic lizard (I'm looking at you, self-titled album), though the girl has delivered legitimately fun and catchy tracks throughout her first four official recordings. Ok, so let's have a look at some of these:

The Pretty Reckless: I dunno Davil. There's an arguably hot chick involved, so that should make you feel a little less guilty.

DGD & Coheed: Hep, surely you can't classify these as guilty pleasures. If so, are you one of those men that also won't touch instant coffee?

Whitechapel, In Flames and ABRed: Maybe the 1st band Funeralopolis, but I'd say you're also marking yourself hard if these are your guilty pleasures.

Sowing, your vote was already counted before I wrote this blog. Although, I wouldn't count Ms. Swift as a guilty pleasure for you... She's more like an unguilty obsession.

Carly Rae Jepson & Owl City: Sometimes you make me seem almost normal Will.

Sappy Ballads: I'm sometimes with you there GB. But you're taking the soft option not naming your #1

Rick Springfield: Now here's a true contendor. I can just see Gameofmetal kicking everyone's ass at karaoke with his rendition of Jessie's Girl.

Daughtry: Good call IncurablyInane. I liked his debut too. I didn't feel at all guilty at the time, but did a little later on.

Slipknot: Dunno hyp. I think they have released enough good stuff to just sneak out of the guilty pleasure category, but I guess this is an individual thing. Just don't be wearing any masks while listening.

Flyleaf & Korn: I still haven't got around to listening to their music in any great detail. I don't think I would feel guilty listening to them though. Ditto for Korn to a lesser extent. They and Slipknot aren't quite in the Limp Bizkit category.

Disturbed: Same as the 3 above I think. I know it's different style of music, but I'd almost put Disturbed into the Papa Roach basket, because they can record some quality songs, but it's surrounded by a whole bunch of crap.

Nick Jonas: oahmed wins. Too bad he's shown himself out.

Foster the People: Nah Ars, they're alright. And thanks for the definition.

Britney: Rudy, you're almost as bad as Sowing. In normal circumstances, I'd say that's not too bad of a choice... But almost 900 listens. Geez.

Black Stone Cherry: I must admit that I have not yet getting around to listening to their discog... But I'd probably like them to some extent as well.

Avril Lavigne: Good call Angelboros. Her name did enter my mind as I was writing this blog. Like you, I guess, there's a handful of songs that get stuck in your mind. But man, there's also some god-awful garbage.

Mariah Carey: Sensational call SoR. How about that debut LP too, where she was wailing like a cat on heat and the whole world just ate it up. "I had a VisssssiiiiiiOOOOnnnnn of youuuuuuuuuUUUUUUUUU"

Marilyn Manson: Again, some good stuff at one point in time. His new LP has been well-received too.

"Who Let The Dogs Out": Only just pipped by I'm Too Sexy for a spot on the blog post.

Dexys Midnight Runners: Fair call Stranger... If only if you are in the UK. The song didn't chart anywhere othern than there.

The Avett Brothers: I'm still to listen to them. Wouldn't have thought they would be a guilty pleasure, but if they have any semblance of a country sound and I like it even a little bit, then it classifies by my standards.

Converge: LOL RP. Did you know that Sowing has been working on a Converge blog post for the last 2 years!?

Wham: Let now wins. Extra points if you have the fluorescent t-shirts tucked away in your wardrobe.

You know, come to think of it, there are quite a number of Atreyu songs I come back to every once in a blue moon; the tracks are usually from either The Curse or A Deathgrip on Yesterday, seeing how those two albums are basically the most tolerable within the band's catalog. There's about two or three tracks I like on their debut full-length recording, though the record is otherwise ultimate meh in quality. And I don't really care for the last two releases, but I've noticed people say the band's marginally improved and whatnot. Hmm... Cliched melodic metalcore or cliched cock rock? Atreyu: I haven't had a listen to their discog, but they're actually not as badly frowned upon as one would think.

Motionless In White: They qualify. But agreed it's the type of music that can sometimes stick with you.

I've come to a point where I don't really feel embarrassed or anything about 'guilty pleasures.' But here are some that might fall into that category.

Justin Bieber = Baby
Nero - Promises
Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe, I Really Like You
Lady Gaga - Paparazzi
Dragonforce - Through The Fire And The Flames

CalculatingInfinity
04.11.15
Lady Gaga's Edge Of Glory is amazing, no shame. So fun.

DaveyBoy

I wouldn't feel too guilty about those last 2. Bieber & Jepsen are another matter though.

Voivod
04.11.15
"Haha. Nice broad answer Voivod. I'm not gonna let you off that easy though... Go on, name just one....."

For example, Kreator's Renewal album. Too "industrial" for the metalheads, "not thrash enough" for the thrashers.

Psychotic Waltz - Mosquito. "total sellout" for the prog purists, "too prog and too lead-guitar-oriented to be good stoner rock" for the stoner rock fans.

Voivod
04.11.15
My Dying Bride - 34.788%... Complete

"experimental crap" for people really into industrial and electronica, "total sellout album" for doom/death metal fans.

DaveyBoy

Voivod, I was almost certain you might choose something that's on the catchy end of metal. I should have known better. :-)

Angelboros
04.11.15
I'm not really that embarrassed about The Pinkprint, speaking of Anaconda. So far it's the one Nicki Minaj album that I was able to sit through and legitimately enjoy despite a couple bungles. I remember Pink Friday having too much filler on it, though I suppose I could go back to at least a few songs there.

DaveyBoy
04.11.15
I just don't think that I could get any pleasure out of any music that Nicki Minaj makes... Or Missy Elliott for that matter.

Katy Perry's another story, and I'm surprised no one's mentioned Avril Lavigne. She'd be another one for me, though I haven't jammed them in a while

One person did mention April Lavigne... & I think she is more a guilty pleasure, rather than a Katy Perry or Lady Gaga.

04.11.15
I occasionally listen to a handful of generic radio-oriented rock/metal/whatever bands. there are some, like Chevelle, 10 Years, and Janus, who I don't really consider guilty pleasures, but then there's stuff like Breaking Benjamin, Slipknot, newer In Flames, and newer All That Remains that I know in the back of my mind are pretty bad but still enjoy anyway. I guess I'm just easily entertained by catchy shit.

also Whitechapel (mostly just the self-titled) and some HIM.

@ Ryuujin: I genuinely like the post-Clayman incarnation of In Flames with the exception of Siren Charms, of course. You could make the argument that the band shat upon their melodeath legacy the moment Reroute to Remain came out, though those albums allowed IF to also gain more mainstream recognition; not that this has anything to do with the quality of their music overall, but still. I find A Sense of Purpose gets a little too much flak - and while it may not be the best recent In Flames offering, there are legitimate jams and fun to be had. Whoracle will continue being known as the best out of all their releases, on the other hand. Meh.

ConcubinaryCode
04.11.15
If by guilty pleasure you mean bands people tend to dismiss then nelly furtado and tatu even though they're both awesome

DaveyBoy
04.11.15
All Saints & Girls Aloud: What ChoccyPhilly, no Spice Girls... or are they just a pleasure?

Chris Brown: "but nah why would I feel guilty". You should with this guy ncguitar. But great to see this blog got you to log in for the 1st time in a while. Stick around, that varied musical taste of yours is perfect for this site.

Breaking Benjamin, Slipknot, newer In Flames, newer All That Remains, Whitechapel & HIM: If this is the worst you listen to Ryuujin, then you're going pretty well.

Pierce The Veil: No need to feel guilty at all about these guys Scoot. They're great.

Black Veil Brides & Blood on the Dance Floor: Good ones edanolem. I like BVB and when Is aw them live last year at a festival, I did feel a little bit guilty. It probably had more to do with their fans though. As for botdf, they shouldn't be too much of a pleasure in the 1st place.

Nelly Furtado & Tatu: I don't think I'd put Nelly in the classification CC, although she has dropped off the radar a little. tatu, on the other hand, fall in the one-hit wonder bracket.

I don't really think about guilty pleasures. I like what I like. That said, there are some things that I'm willing to defend my tastes for:

Emmure - in this case, the song N.I.A. (News in Arizona), i.e. the only good song these guys have ever put out. There's something about Frankie Palmeri's voice in this one that gives it the br00tal menace that they try for so hard but can never reach, like the low spoken second verse and the ending (you're gonna die in sedonaaaaaa ad infinitum)

Spineshank - The lyrics are really adolescent and whiny, but hell, I grew up with these guys, I can't totally let them go. They also had a cold, industrial feel that made them stand out from the rest of the nu metal pack they were in with. That latest record though... :(

Breaking Benjamin - Mentioned numerous times before, I'm sure. But even though they absolutely refuse to change their sound even in the slightest, they still have enough good songs to where I still kind of care about what they're doing. Anthem of the Angels was a highlight off the last record. It would be great if they did more songs like that in the future.

They won't though.

judasgoat
04.12.15
Also when dubstep was the hip new thing I did like a couple of Skrillex songs and I kind of hate myself for that.

DaveyBoy
04.12.15
All fair calls judas. Emmure do show some potential on occasions. That's what's so annoying when 95% of their stuff sounds like they intentionally sabotaged the songs.

Spineshank qualifies under the nostalgia criteria, while BB just know how to satisfy.

LOL re: Skrillex. But well done for the confession.

DaveyBoy
04.12.15
Bring Me The Horizon: A bit surprised they hadn't already popped up in this discussion.

Lady Gaga x2 more: I think we all know she has talent. It shouldn't be a guilty pleasure solely based on her music being pop.

"Keep on Lovin' You" by REO Speedwagon: Oh, yes Arcade. Now the real you is coming out. I know you'd be fan of 'We Built This City' as well.

Hawthorne Heights, yeah, i know they are awful and their lyrics are lame, i just can't help enjoying many of their songs, and i really believe Decembers is actually good, apart from that Saetia and early Senses Fail...

DaveyBoy
04.27.15
"lame lyrics" are often a criteria that is required for a guilty pleasure. There are just times that you simply want to ignore the words being screamed at you and enjoy the music as is.

A little bit of Palisades and Issues.

MattTD
04.27.15
Issues weren't awful live. Weren't incredibly good either, but not awful.

DaveyBoy
04.27.15
Palisades & Issues: I don't either band really all that well, so can't comment too much. But those metalcore - with a touch of electronic - bands do often fall into that "I don't want to like it, but it's aggressive & catchy" category.

Mort.
04.27.15
I have a high tolerance for electronic metalcore bands due to Enter Shikaris debut being my first metalcore/post hardcore album , my introduction to screamed vocals and being one of my favourite albums of all time

So probs a few I See Stars, Asking Alexandria and other such bands songs are my guitly pleasures

Also davey your dedication to responding to comments on your discussions is impressive, whens the article coming? I swear its been a while since a new one

Ignimbrite
04.27.15
There's definitely some kinda generic metalcore that I really like, e.g. Demon Hunter, The Word Alive, etc.

I'd say T-Swizzle, but fuck that, I ain't guilty about that.

DaveyBoy
04.28.15
I See Stars, AA, etc...: Definitely Mort. That's where "the catchy" comes in. The problem with these bands is - imo - if they're not catchy, there's no in-between quality wise. It's either good or downright terrible. Mort, see 6 comments up from yours re: my absence.

Taylor Swift: I think she's just become accepted amongst the wider music community. I'm not 100% certain why, but it might be due to extra diversity, branching out, etc...

Pierce the Veil and Sleeping with Sirens but I can't remember the last time I listened to one of their songs. Pierce the Veil have always been a pretty consistent band and they have some amazing songs. Yeah Boy & Doll Face, Currents Convulsive, The Boy Who Could Fly, Bulls in the Bronx, etc. I've got a ton of sentiment for them too. I wouldn't say nostalgia since they haven't been around for too long but they definitely meant a lot to me. And they don't get the worst ratings on this site but It's usually considered generic nasally post-hardcore. I haven't heard Sleeping with Sirens' latest and Feel kinda sucked but I had some guilty pleasures on that as well, but I've had If You Can't Hang & James Dean and Aubrey Hepburn stuck in my head for weeks on end on numerous ocassions
