RIP Frank Beard 2026-08-19 by John Marinakis CONTRIBUTOR | 11 Comments | Frank Beard, the longtime drummer of ZZ Top, died on August 17 at the age of 77. He passed away while receiving hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, surrounded by his family. A cause of death has not been disclosed.
Billy Gibbons remembered his bandmate as a close friend, collaborator and naturally innovative drummer whose unmistakable backbeat remained fundamental to ZZ Top's sound throughout the decades.
Beard joined ZZ Top shortly after the group's formation in 1969 and introduced Gibbons to bassist Dusty Hill, completing the trio's classic lineup. He performed on all fifteen of the band's studio albums, from 1971's ZZ Top's First Album through 2012's La Futura and helped drive enduring songs such as [i[La Grange[/i] Tush, Gimme All Your Lovin', Sharp Dressed Man and Legs.
The trio remained together for more than fifty years before Hill's death in 2021. Beard and Gibbons continued ZZ Top with bassist Elwood Francis, although declining health had recently forced the drummer to withdraw from touring.
Beard was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with ZZ Top in 2004. He is survived by his wife, Debbie, and three children.

One of my fondest concert memories was getting to see ZZ Top open for Tom Petty back in 2010-2011. These guys were a big part of my life growing up thanks to my dad, so I have a lot of great memories tied to their music.
RIP Legend.
