Black Sabbath's 1st Book 2026-08-17 by John Marinakis CONTRIBUTOR | 1 Comments | Black Sabbath have announced their first officially authorised book, “The Masters of Reality – Why Black Sabbath Matter.”
Created by renowned rock photographer Ross Halfin in direct collaboration with the band, the 500-page volume traces Black Sabbath’s history from their formation in Birmingham during the late 1960s to their final “Back to the Beginning” concert in July 2025.
The book focuses on the group’s classic lineup of Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward. It contains an extensive collection of rare photographs, memorabilia and archival material, much of which has not previously been published.
Writers Geoff Barton and Dave Ling have also contributed essays based on interviews conducted specifically for the project with all four original members.
Production began two years ago, with an announcement originally planned shortly after Black Sabbath’s final performance. Those plans were postponed following Osbourne’s death. Halfin has confirmed that the singer was closely involved with the project and signed its bookplates months before the farewell concert, alongside Iommi, Butler and Ward.
“The Masters of Reality – Why Black Sabbath Matter” will be published by Rufus Publications in October.
