need to give this a spin, the dm is flying fast and furious after a relatively slow start to the year

Underrated group imo.

oh hell yeah

album is a pretty good example of why most extreme metal drummers trigger/sample replace their kits.
unless you really have the chops for it, your shortcomings become glaringly obvious when it’s just mic’d.

hyp thats a real astute criticism but also

Oblivionauts is one of the best songs I’ve heard all year.

@hyperion: Depends what types of shortcomings you're talking about. For dynamic consistency, yes, but for subdivision/timing consistency, the opposite is true - timing shortcomings stand out much more with a sampled kick/normalized volume.
But mostly extreme metal drummers sample their kicks because with purely acoustic kick drum recordings it gets muddy and difficult to clearly distinguish notes at high speeds, unless you have a good sound engineer who gates them, and gating them efficiently requires that they be triggered in addition to mic'd, not for sample replacement purposes, but for aligning the gating. And if you're already hooking up triggers, using the samples instead is a lot easier to work with/faster/cheaper. Mixing the acoustic audio with the samples usually yields the best tone if you have the resources.

sure but in the case of this album, neither the timing nor the dynamics are consistent, which is made very apparent by the lack of post-processing.

The subdivision precision seems pretty tight tbh. Tempo felt pretty loose at points, though. Recording to a straight metronome wouldn't have been an option because it's absolutely littered with tempo changes, but it could have benefited from mapping out click tracks prior to recording.

it does sound kinda jank but i like that the kicks thump :p
