Dream Theater Announce New Album

2021-07-28 by Fernando Alves STAFF | 41 Comments
Iconic progressive metallers Dream Theater have announced that their 15th album, titled A View From the Top of the World, is scheduled to be released on October 22nd via InsideOut Music. The full-length will feature seven songs with a runtime of just over 70 minutes.

“We just love to play our instruments,” observes Petrucci. “That never goes away. I love to be creative, write, and exercise that part of my mind. We’ve been able to do this for a long time, and we don’t take it for granted. Whenever we get together, we know we can’t disappoint ourselves or our fans, so we manage to try even harder."

“We approach every album like it’s our first,” adds LaBrie. “It’s been such a great ride, but we’re not going to stop.”

Tracklist:

1. The Alien (9:32)
2. Answering the Call (7:35)
3. Invisible Monster (6:31)
4. Sleeping Giant (10:05)
5. Transcending Time (6:25)
6. Awaken the Master (9:47)
7. A View From the Top of the World (20:24)

I'm actually a bit hopeful for this one. The overly long songs make me think LaBire's vocal lines are sparser and easier for him to sing. Even if it's self-indulgent (of course it will be), hopefully it's not generic. LTE 3 and Petrucci's solo album might have revamped their inspiration.

Album art is not great, but not terrible either.

I haven't been excited for a new DT album for a long time, but I am looking forward to listening to the t/t. If there's one thing that DT has always delivered on, it's 20+ minute t/t epics (A Change of Seasons, Octavarium, Six Degrees).

Getting strange 90s vibes from that album art, but I like it. Another thing about this album is that it was written during the height of the pandemic, with the band being mostly remote from each other–despite finishing construction of "Dream Theater Headquarters" (DTHQ) studio.

There's a few other bands I'm worried whose new albums could have been negatively affected by the pandemic, such as Skyharbor and Closure In Moscow.

Looking at those track times I’m appropriately pumped for this to be good.

Judging by the track lengths, doesn't look like there's any Sirius XM Liquid Metal staple track a la Paralyzed off the last album...

Distance over Time for me was their best record since Octavarium, so I am extremely pumped for this.

Was not a fan of their last record, but I'll still give this a shot. Hope they nix those clown boots on the cover though.

that's gold

Last great album was ''Dramatic Turn...'', and DoT had some decent song-writing.

I do. Take the hipgnosis team put a bit of Hugh Syme in the mix and there you have it. Pure Surrealist artwork.

"No Dream Theater album has good cover art"

Octavarium's artwork rules. Dramatic Turn of Events' is great too but that one is just a copy of Supertramp's Famous Last Words

The stupid shoes ruin a somewhat decent artwork, yeah

"Band should have named the new album "Social Distance over Time""

Save that for the remaster in 10 years

Also agreed their artworks all seem to look the same and are all really weird/bad. Like it's the same nephew who's using clip art and putting these album covers together.

Ehhh...I'll check it out as always. I haven't been into anything they've done post ADTOE but who knows, it might be good. I just hope Labrie stays within his comfortable range and doesn't stick any of his dying cat sounds on it.
