The Chicks drop the Dixie

2020-06-25 by neekafat CONTRIBUTOR | 80 Comments
Acclaimed country band formerly known as The Dixie Chicks have rebranded themselves as "The Chicks," dropping the word "Dixie" from their band name due to its connotations of southern culture. This follows fellow country band formerly known as Lady Antebellum changing their name to "Lady A" following nation-wide protests against police brutality and other forms of oppression black Americans face in everyday life.

This announcement came with the third single from their upcoming album Gaslighter (due July 17th). Entitled "March March," it references numerous elements of American politics. The music video contains images of the recent George Floyd protests, as well as an instrumental coda that lists the names of several black American victims of police brutality.

As much as I respect them for willingly torching their career to stand against the Iraq War, this is a rather performative and lame move I think

I don't wholly disagree that it's partially performative, but a large portion of their career has been about distancing themselves from the southern imagery their genre contains so it makes sense to me

I dunno if any of y'all follow Saving Country Music, but they are pretty great with covering new/lesser known country music. The main writer is also very much a "racism and sexism against white men exist and the left are just as bad and bigoted for painting broadstrokes against the right", but also isn't super Trump-y. His political takes are always . . . Interesting. So needless to say, his reaction to this will be fun

“This is my life. They’re using the name because of a Black Lives Matter incident that, for them, is just a moment in time,” says the original Lady A, a 61-year-old black singer who’s released multiple records under the name

The thing that rubs me a little wrong about this is that the term "Dixie" doesn't really connect to or reflect the legacy of slavery in the south, it's just a general term for the region (versus "antebellum", which connotes some degree of nostalgia for the pre-civil war era South and by extension the slavery that fueled it), so the name change feels like it's less about distancing themselves from actual historic oppression and more about placating casual listeners who might be turned off by a generic reference to the American south and can't be bothered to research the term.

It's a nice gesture and all, and I have no doubt that the band had only good intentions in changing their name, but idk it just seems a bit silly

"As a definite geographic location within the United States, "Dixie" is usually defined as the eleven Southern states that seceded in late 1860 and early 1861 to form the new Confederate States of America."

Makes sense. Seems pretty cut and dry. Dixie definitely is more than just 'southern culture' slang, and they dropped it. Unfortunately, that just gives people more time to bitch about them using the word 'chicks', ha ha.

"The two biggest reasons for this are:
1.) We are not Muslims, and as such, it is disrespectful and irresponsible for us to use the word jihad in our band's name.
2.) We no longer wish to be a living reminder of president Andrew Jackson. Interesting historical figure as he was, he was an odious person and our fascination with him has grown stale."

Kompys2000

How much income do casual fans generate tho? Not much if Spotify revenue is anything to go by. One superfan who buys concert tickets and a bunch of merch will make an artist more money than 500 casuals who stream the album a half dozen times and call it a day

Lord(e)Po)))ts
June 29th 2020
55665 Comments

well i wouldn't say spotify revenue is anything to go by for bands

touring is where most of the money is for most bands, especially since they can sling their merch there too. and of course casuals fill up the extra space at shows and buy merch on a whim. so yeah no i'd definitely argue that most bands on the planet would most definitely consider the loss of any fans at all over a name change considerable. especially ones that don't make much to begin with.
