there was no reason to make this. It's like when Sonata Arctica re-recorded Ecliptica, nobody wanted it, and the end result was a much worse version the original, which is still incredible. Based on this track, this will likely suffer the same fate. Who wanted this?

the production on the original is definitely better, deeper, the guitar tone is widely praised to this day.
this newer production is actually sorta underproduced imo, the drums sound really dry and not very powerful for a metal album, guitars feel small in the mix too.

In Flames must've thought: "You know the bands and record producers who try to imitate the guitar tone on Clayman to this day? Yeah, fuck those people."

wildinferno2010

I dunno, this sounds muddier than the original to me. I'm no production expert, but the kick drum has basically no bass in it, the rhythm and lead guitars blend with each other in a way that sounds really messy, the guitars just sound weaker overall. The harmony section at around 2:20 sounds fucking terrible.

If there is anything I've learned in all my years of audio, it's that most metal fans have no clue what they're talking about when it comes to production. Anders Friden, February 2019:

"I will never go back and do another 'The Jester Race' or 'Whoracle' or 'Colony' or 'Clayman'. It wouldn't be right. It wouldn't be true to that album. That album is perfect in every way. If I try to go back 20 years and try to recreate something when I'm in a whole different state of mind, that wouldn't do it justice. It would just only be bad."

This sounds about like how I imagined them re recording this would sound. The only complaint I have is the same as a lot of others with that lead section at 2:20. The ending starts out with a nice shreddy lick but then just nose dives into a pile of noise and I don't know what is going on there. It's like he forgot what he was supposed to play for the last part and just said "fuck it I don't wanna do another take" lol. Sucks though because that part was a highlight of the song in the original and i kinda wish they would have just left at the same.

Also anders sounds the same as he has in the past few albums and I think a lot of you just haven't listened to those

Anders's vocals follow the Korn-like path since 2003. I suppose they are bettered the last two years but the path is still the same.
