Niklas Sundin leaves DT

2020-03-22 by Kyle Ward EMERITUS | 65 Comments
Guitarist and founding member of the Swedish melodic death metal band Dark Tranquillity has decided to quit the band.

On a post on the band's official Facebook page, Sundin released the following:

As some of you know, I’ve had a break from playing with D.T. since 2016 in order to focus on family life. With the “Atoma” touring cycle now completed and a new album recording about to commence, the time is right to officially announce my departure from the band.

I’m very grateful for the experiences that the past 30 years have brought. We founded D.T. as teenagers without any musical knowledge, and somehow our songs took us all across the world, helped establish a new subgenre of metal, brought us several Grammy nominations and - more importantly - had a positive and life-altering impact on people all over the globe. This is extremely humbling, and more than what most artists ever could ask for.

However, it's no secret that I always enjoyed the creative process more than the performance aspects of being in a band, and the required extensive touring held less and less appeal with every album. The band and the fans deserve members that want to be on the road as much as possible in order to keep the (forward) momentum going, and for this reason I prefer to step aside and direct my musical creativity towards other areas. I’ll still be involved in the visual side of D.T. and am working on the cover illustration for the next album as we speak.

I send my warmest regards to the guys in the band, the incredible crew and of course to everyone that supported us over the past three decades. As for future musical endeavours, my electronic project Mitochondrial Sun released its debut album last month, and there are several other projects and collaborations (both metal and non-metal) in the pipeline. Onwards!

No surprises here, he never toured with the band and when he did he seemed like he had zero interest and would rather be literally anywhere else.

Sucks that one of the OG's is gone but it's cool that he will still be contributing artwork.

Also interesting to note that DT currently have no full-time guitarists anymore since Henriksson and Sundin are out. Does this pave the way for Chris Amott to be a full time member?

I hope not. Keep Arch Enemy influence far away.

This will undoubtedly change their style at least somewhat, moreso if they get a couple new guitarists. I am not totally against Amott joining assuming he can keep with their style and not go full Arch Enemy, since he and the dude from Skyfire are live guitarists for DT it only makes sense that both are brought on as full members.

Changes are coming for DT

I'm cool with Amott joining full time, but yeah: no Arch Enemy influence please
I don't necessarily see it happening though because I guess Arch Enemy - despite them being humiliatingly inferior to the almighty DT - still pays the bills more

Pretty sure Sundin hasn’t written the majority of their music for the last few albums. Not that seeing him leave isn’t sad but unless whoever replaces him full time really brings some new shit to the table it’ll probably be business as usual

We can dream, can't we?

When Henriksson quit last year he said he had no interest in music anymore so I don't think that's gonna happen.

I can't even think of who would be a good fit from a songwriting standpoint. DT is just so much different than most (all?) other Melodeath bands.

Agreed. Niklas and Martin were easily my favourite melodeath guitarists and songwriters. Sucks that both of them have now left, but they leave a huge legacy behind.

Brandstrom and Jivarp will probably be the primary composers, which started happening from Construct anyway. I think they might go mellower and in the "Anathema" direction that Anders hinted at a few years ago

Projector is one of my favorites but it’s just below their first three albums. And Construct is right below Projector

I think they do the goth/melodeath thing almost as well as the pure melodeath stuff of the early days. I would def want a bit of both

I definitely think it's time for them to make a change. They've been at it a long time, and at this point there's only the vocalist and drummer left from the first album. Maybe time to take some risks... at least for one album

I honestly haven’t heard any of the bands Johan Reinholdz has played in. Also is he actually writing for the band or is he just a live musician?
