Inb4 people bitching that it didn't blow them away into the fifth dimension on first listen. Those are your expectations talking. Give the song room and time to breathe and see if consecutive listens don't elicit a better response, now that the hype has worn off.

It's nice, but I must say I get major we've-heard-this-before vibes. I mean they still sound like they have for the past 20 years.

Tone/feel/chord progressions/drumming all sound like Lateralus/10,000 Days, but a little more free-flowing and unfocused, drawn out, without a clear direction.

I'm in the "yup, this is Tool doing Tool and I like Tool therefore it's a good Tool song"-camp. I'm not sure why anyone would have expected them to do anything radically different. What would that even be anyway? Did people want them to go full-Grateful Dead or swing the other way and go full-Meshuggah? I don't understand Tool super-fans, they honestly perplex me. It's as bad as Rick and Morty stans.

Surprisingly, Maynard kind of brings this song down a bit. His vocals are just boring and drawn out the whole track. The first verse is nice, but everything else seems kind of half assed to me. One of his specialties is coming up with catchy vocal hooks amongst complex rhythms and that’s just not the case here. I’m sure it’ll grow a bit in me though. Still very much looking forward to the album.

Exactly how I feel. It can work though, if the album focusses on that and flows nicely from idea to idea. The long duration of both album and songs hints at this too. But directionless is the main word here.

It seems like Maynard is decidedly the weakest member now. His lyrics have been pretty on the nose for a while now, with crotchety, banal offerings like Disillusioned. He seems to have thoroughly and purposefully disengaged from the creative process for at least two albums at this point, recording the vocals separately, which is not a good formula for emotive synchronicity. Such are the artistic consequences of a more comfortable life.

Also, new logo looks like a design Fear Factory would have rejected on the basis of it being too unoriginal.

DarkSideOfLucca
August 7th 2019
14979 Comments

I mean it's kind of hard to say he's the weakest when his vocal work on The Pot was some of the most impressive in the entire bands career. The notes he hits on that song are absolutely insane.

Also, agreed the lyrics were more straight forward on 10,000 Days, but I didn't find them to be any less engaging tbh

The two Rogan interviews Maynard has done are definitely worth a listen. He is very open about how Tool pretty much operates without him. He hardly ever sees the band and only comes in when they have a song written and recorded. He even admits frustration about how it took the other guys so long to finish the material, as if he’s been waiting years to put his vocals on it.

Also what the FUCK is that album art? Very lame album art compared to all the others. It looks like something out of MS Paint and from the 90's.

I was worried about the vocal mix on this album and this song leads me to believe it may be an ETE kind of mix which I think just sucks, bad. Vocals are too loud. It isn't mixed in. Just my hot take.

After numerous listens, I think the main issue is Maynard’s vocal melody on the chorus. It’s just not that memorable and kind of bland. If there was a big vocal hook, it would’ve made this song so much better because the music is great on the chorus. His lines during the verses are great though.

As a massive Tool fan I'm happy that they still sound as good as they did years ago. Danny's performance on here is particularly great. That being said, I'm glad this is the opener. The end is pretty explosive and great, but I'm hoping for some more hard hitting moments and more experimentation from their previous work on the rest of the album. Great comeback though.

Song is decent but I hope the band hasn’t forgotten that a HUGE part of their sound and the reason why so much of their music is great, is ENERGY. We don’t need 80 minutes of Reflection and The Patient no matter how cerebral it is (those songs are fantastic mind you).

I get the love to be honest, Theyre a great band and I can see WHY people would love them and like what they do but the thinking that if you dont like them its because you just dont 'get it' is so ridiculously pretentious. I went into this record with no ill feelings towards the band and no love either and just found it incredibly inane. Every fanbase of every major piece of art has a select number of insufferable retards but as someone mentioned so far in this thread: I rarely see people being obsessively annoying about tool and I see more people obsessively pointing out how annoying Tool fans are. Pretending Tool fans are the only fans that worship their band to such a level while most other fanbases are level-headed is so fucking preposterous it's unreal.

It's true though. Look at all those sad naysayers. They actually spend time to go out in public and compromise their name with some desperate failure narrative, when they could just relax and enjoy the music.

Don't they realize that when this album turns out to be a good Tool album, that their names are up there, forever marking them as silly subhumans?

I could actually give you a comprehensive psychological analysis of the motives and agenda behind such negative and infantile behavior, but it should be plain for everyone to see that it is tightly connected to a sub-average penis size.

Finished the album. Solid 3.4 from me. Sticking with my original prediction of a 3.2 average.

How do you even say something like "It's a solid 3.4" where the hell does the .4 even come from? Why not say 3.5?

*Popcorn*
We need that juicy antagonism.

When you're enjoying a Tool song, a little voice goes 'this seems to piss the subhumans off' and I find it improves the experience.

I'm surprised that the site hasn't been completely caked in reviews for this thing yet

Me too, with the leak, I was expecting a handful already that would need to be taken down.
