RIP Conway Savage (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds)

2018-09-03 by Rowan5215 STAFF | 15 Comments
A statement on the website of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds today announced the death of Conway Savage, longtime keyboardist and vocalist with the band. Savage joined the Bad Seeds in 1990 with The Good Son, coinciding with their shift in style away from angular post-punk to a softer chamber pop sound. His eclectic piano stylings and stunning lead and backing vocals quickly became an essential part of the band's sound, best exemplified by his gorgeous duet with Cave on Henry's Dream cut "When I First Came to Town". According to Pitchfork, Savage passed from a brain tumour which he'd undergone surgery to remove last year. He was 58.

The statement from the band's website reads:
"A member of Bad Seeds for nearly thirty years, Conway was the anarchic thread that ran through the band's live performances. He was much loved by everyone, band members and fans alike. Irascible, funny, terrifying, sentimental, warm-hearted, gentle, acerbic, honest, genuine - he was all of these things and quite literally "had the gift of a golden voice," high and sweet and drenched in soul. On a drunken night, at four in the morning, in a hotel bar in Cologne, Conway sat at the piano and sang Streets of Laredo to us, in his sweet, melancholy style and stopped the world for a moment. There wasn't a dry eye in the house. Goodbye Conway, there isn't a dry eye in the house."

Damn. RIP

Life is just trying to kick Nick Cave in the balls in recent years. First one of his sons and now Conway Savage. I really hope things get through this okay.
