Sound Change Sevenfold

Old-school hard rockers Avenged Sevenfold reached the top 30 of The Billboard 200 with their 2005 major-label debut, "City of Evil," and they're presently holed up in a Burbank, Calif., studio trying to top it. The as-yet-untitled effort is expected in October via Warner Bros.

"It's very groove-oriented," frontman M. Shadow says of the new sound. "On 'City of Evil' we had so much going on-the drums were going a million miles an hour and everything was [at level] 10 at all times with really crazy arrangements."

This time around, a greater concern was placed on creating a melody rather than ultra-heavy music that lashes out all over the place. One track that exemplifies this departure Shadow describes as a "Hotel California"-type of song layered with various guitar textures and backed by a gospel choir. Elsewhere, "Scream" is a headbanger filled with an "AC/DC swagger" and chromatic scale loops, and the working-titled "Gun Slinger" begins with an acoustic slide guitar before erupting into a heavy thrasher.

As for outside pressure to up the ante on the new album, Shadow says the band didn't feel much stress. "We write what we really feel in our hearts," he says. "The label didn't push us. We took six months to write, and we wrote every single day and just drained everything out of us. At the end of the day, we were 100 percent happy."

So far, Avenged has finished recording 13 songs, with four more tracks still in the works. Shadow says the band will be done mixing the self-produced set by Aug. 1 before embarking on a tour of Asia five days later.

So, they're basically Bon Jovi now?

Hopefully not.

Although I do like me some Bon Jovi.

Am I the only one who thinks that this sounds like it has potential to, at the very least, be better than CoE?

I'm with you Akira, but it still has the potential to do worse.

Either way I'll still buy this.

city of evil was pretty good and i cant wait for this to come out. They have too much talent to be considered a boyband.

Dear Lord! I hope they cut some, because 17 tracks is way too much Avenged Sevenfold for one album.

It's going to be mediocre and nothing less, as always.

From the descriptions, the songs could turn out really cool, or really lame and cheesy. Avenged Sevenfold is the kind of band that is always better when at Level 10 at all times...I'm nervous.

Shadows is a good singer but he talks out of his ass 90% of the time.
They should find a new singer, and this is coming from a fan boy.

Shadows is a great singer in my opinion, he did the screams awesome and his clean vocals are unique. Idk, I just like him.
This cd will make or break them for me. So far I love them but this could potentially be a disaster.

Shadows needs to sing more and whine less on cd. Then I'll at least enjoy his vocals to some extent.

boy band??? you mus be confused, panic! at the disco, fallout boy, etc., those are the new boy bands...a7x is pure metal, i dont give a fuck what all you assholes say, everyone either hates or loves them, and hating them seems to be the thing to do until a song like bat country comes out and then you assholes love them for that one song, (which btw, bat country is the worst thing that ever happened to the band...)..and dont worry, im prety sure his whining voice is coming to an end, from what ive sampled of their new stuff, itlll be sorta a cross between WTF and COE, the clean vocals that were on WTF, are apparently making a comeback, which is pretty much the best thing thats happened to the band in a while...and losing shadows would totally kill the band, theyre all best friends, the band would be non existent without him..and besides, hes perfect for the job, in every way..city of evil was rough for the most part cause of the new style, but now hes back to one hes more comfortable with and hell be great again...dam this is a long comment, haha
