Dolly Parton, the legendary singer-songwriter affectionately known as the Queen of Country, has died at the age of 80.
Parton died peacefully in Nashville, Tennessee, on August 25. Her passing was announced by her nephew Bryan Seaver, acting on behalf of the Parton and Owens families. A private funeral will be held for her immediate family.
Born into a family of twelve children in rural Tennessee, Parton moved to Nashville after completing high school and released her debut album, Hello, I'm Dolly in 1967. Her partnership with Porter Wagoner helped establish her as a country star before she embarked on an enormously successful solo career.
Over the following decades, Parton wrote and recorded such enduring songs as Jolene, Coat of Many Colors, 9 to 5 and I Will Always Love You. The latter became a defining song of her career before Whitney Houston transformed it into an international phenomenon in 1992.
Parton sold more than 100 million records, earned eleven Grammy Awards and entered both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her talents also extended to acting, with prominent roles in films including "9 to 5" and "Steel Magnolias."
Away from entertainment, she became equally admired for her philanthropy. Her Imagination Library distributed hundreds of millions of free books to children, while her charitable work also supported education, disaster relief and medical research.
Her family remembered Parton for the music, humor, warmth and kindness through which she made people around the world feel like family. She was preceded in death by Carl Dean, her husband of nearly six decades, who died in 2025.

Being from the south and living all of my life here, Dolly was a presence and icon we all held so dearly. Definitely a huge loss. Iām gonna plan a trip sometime in October to go to Dollywood and attend her new museum: Life of Many Colors
