State Champs Make Sound

2021-08-25 by jesper EMERITUS | 8 Comments
Pop punk outfit State Champs have released a new song titled 'Just Sound'. Ironically, the song is accompanied by a music video, meaning it isn't just sound. Following 2018's Living Proof and an acoustic EP not even the band members' parents are aware of, it is as of yet unknown whether 'Just Sound' will be featured on an upcoming project. However, it is rumoured that this potential project will involve more sound.

each cycle, i lose more hope that they'll ever churn out anything remotely as good as The Finer Things, but let's be honest, they're never topping that masterpiece

that said, it's pretty solid. not changing the formula hardly at all, but Derek sounds good, the guitars have the crunch they always do. It's as much a pleasant melody as it is....fuck i gotta do it....just sound. It trends toward background noise but it sounds good

3.5/5

edit: lyrically i'm guessing they're trying to nail down the "don't lose hope, things will be okay" shtick that's really become a thing since covid started, but it's pretty damn late to the party

Definitely not. The production sounds so compressed that any distinctiveness in the lead singer's voice that was audible in the band's first three albums has been ground down into a sound more reminiscent of really generic post-hardcore than pop-punk.
