Steven Wislon announces new compilation

2015-07-16 by Onirium | 32 Comments
English progressive rock musician Steven Wilson has announced the upcoming release of a new compilation, entitled Transience The album consists of thirteen personally chosen songs representing the more accessible side of Wilson's music, mainly as a solo artist. The objective is to create an ideal entry point to his discography, "without the more 'difficult' stuff getting in the way", as he states.

Therefore, Transience contains solely "shorter song-based tracks", including edits of 'Happy Returns' and 'Deform to Form a Star', as well as a single version of the title-song. Although the compilation does not present new material, it comprises a recent recording of 'Lazarus', which he had previously released in 2005, with his band Porcupine Tree. This new version consists of a live recording made earlier this year, and was later overdubbed in the studio.

The compilation, will be released exclusively in vinyl format on September 4th, coinciding with the second leg of Wilson's Hand. Cannot. Erase. tour. It is currently available for pre-order here:

I don't get this. He makes progressive music, no one wants to hear the shorter songs..

Zeiu.. That is true, but at the same time anyone looking to give his stuff a try may not want to sit through 3 hours of content just to hear 6 songs. In this form yes they won't know what his progressive side is like, but if they listen to this and find they like his vocals and his instrumental style in all of its varieties then they should like listening to the same content in a longer form.

I like his simple songs as much as the proggy ones tbh, though I'm not sure a limited edition vinyl is the best way to create an entry point for people

Why he insists on always putting Lazarus on these compilations and always playing it live I'll never know. It's a good track but when you have songs like Trains and Shesmovedon that fall into the more 'simple' category, it just seems a bit daft.

So he's releasing a compilation of songs to help people to get into his material, but putting it exclusively on vinyl?

Yeah, sounds like he thought that one out.

Blatant cash grab, although there's nothing wrong with that.
Don't like Wilson at all though.

Wilson has always loved the cash grabs, hence why he releases every album in a pointless 'ultra deluxe' limited version for ridiculous amounts of money

Why?

I wish I could afford such a work of art like that

People here hates on Wilson cause they don't want their underground musicians to be succesful or cause it's the cool thing to do

It's just a fucking book. The deluxe edition of the 'Raven...' album was at least £100 and all it was was a fancy ass book, with not even a single bonus track worth mentioning (except a CD of demos of all the album songs, big fuckin' whoop). Similarly, he used to rave about how the 5.1 surround sound mixed CD's he sold were the only true way to listen to music until the vinyl hype train got going and now he doesn't bother with the surround sound mixes anymore, just the vinyls. I love his music, but yaknow

I hate Wilson because I honestly don't like a single album this man touched. Nothing by Porcupine Tree, nothing from his solo-work and nothing from his other projects. Also, he is a douchebag, released too many cash-grabs for his own good and is pretentious as hell. Enough reasons?

Literally the dumbest release he's done, and his last two albums have been complete bullshit. His good music is Bass Communion, Insurgents and a smattering of PT albums. It's frustrating because every new release has potential, he just shits all over it with "nostalgia" or other terrible ideas.

A lot of artists do that, but people only blame on Steven, what a hypocrite. You just confirmed what I said, if an artist is underground he/she/them has to remain underground. Also, pretentious? He's experimented with so many genres and was succesful in many of them, artists evolve you know. You just don't like the guy, that's all. Whatever your reasons are, it doesn't matter cause he's doing what he feels and like or not, you're in a very tiny minority (:

i don't even like steven wilson but aren't you being a little too needlessly harsh?

Ok, you don't like his music
How is he a douchebag?
You know you can buy his normal music just fine if you don't like the demos and stuff, right?
And I can't believe we're still using "pretentious" against artists on this fucking site

I don't want to be that guy, but aside from the fact that he obviously likes his Pink Floyd, King Crimson and himself a little too much; why is he a douche bag and how is he pretentious?

Okay buddy, originally I didn't want to do this, but since you're obviously an okay guy, here.

I wish Steven Wilson all the success in the world. The pure fact that he is a chart-topping musician with such heady material is nothing short of amazing, so obviously he must be doing something right. I wish that to every musician. Hell, if Vomir had a chart-topping album I would be happy for him, and I hate that guys music just a bit too much for my own good. Nothing is more satisfying to me than to see a hard-working underground musician getting mainstream-attention.

I still don't like his music. And I don't care if you like him or if I'm in a minority, I just don't like it. I personally think his concepts are hilariously pretentious and bloated (especially Fear of a Blank Planet, god damn), his songwriting a bit too forced and his guitar-playing a bit too overrated. But hey, listen to him all you want, 5 his albums, have emotional bonds with him, who am I to tell you not to? That's the beautiful thing about the dynamics of opinions.

And about him being a douchebag, I know a lot of people (count, 7) who had to work with him during tours and stuff, and they all tell me he was one of the most insufferable people to work for. That's where my dislike for him as a person comes from. And I criticise every musician for releasing too many cash-grabs or being an asshole, even my favourite ones.

I hope I made myself really clear now.

On the other hand, I'm not really surprised, because my friends are massive assholes, so maybe they were awful to him first. It's a probability. I'm just saying what they told me.

I guess I should take the time to explain: I don't have a problem with people not liking "pretentious" stuff.

If you think his concepts are bloated and just not well executed, then I'm ok with that. The reason that I question people whenever someone says something is "pretentious" is that, more often than not, they're not giving the concepts a fair chance and just dislike music that take artistic risks. I believe some musicians view their music as art pieces, and so should music fans, so of course artists are gonna' take artistic decisions and express themselves, one should expect that, and that's not necessarily being "pretentious".

Now, since you think his concepts are just not well-executed (a completely different thing), then I'm 100% ok with that, and sorry if I made you feel attacked with my comment.

What I don't get though is people who hate an artist as a person because they don't like their music. That's just dumb. It's a very common thing, and your comment made it seem like that was the reason you hated on him. Now that I know that the reasons are others (although I don't agree with hating people because of rumors), I apologize.

It's all fine and dandy, I made the two comments yesterday evening after a rather rough day, so I may have expressed myself in a way that can easily be misunderstood. It's good that we could actually discuss our viewpoints here, to avoid unnecessary attacks and hate.
