It's just funny because he told people to steal his stuff in 2007, and all because he was pissed at his record label's ridiculous pricing of Year Zero in certain countries (the CD changes from black to white with heat and he paid for it out of his own pocket so his fans wouldn't have to). Still, he could have made a fair amount of bank if he continued the pay-what-you-can model from Ghosts on Hesitation Marks.

Trent was down with music piracy just a few years ago. I mean, if I was a musician I'd want to be paid for my shit too, but it's kinda lame to do a turnaround like that. Especially now that he's not in the spotlight he used to be.

I did about two weeks ago when it came out. Everyone's making it look like he said he's anti pirating, which isn't the case. He's famous for uploading collections of the best of NIN on Pirate Bay for fuck's sake, and he made the Closure documentary available for free recently- hardcore fans would have shelled out for that big time.

I think a big part of his negativity here is probably related to the failure of Niggy Tardust, where he implemented the pay what you want method. He didn't do this for The Slip- that was straight up free, a gift for the fans, and Ghosts used different pricing options. Barely anybody paid anything for the Niggy Tardust album, to the point where Trent considered it a failure. He just seems like a guy that has experimented with different pricing methods, and now that he's in a better relationship with a new record label, this works the best for him.

Also, how is the title "Trent Reznor swears at fans" in context? Granted, I am a huge NIN fan, so I am also quite biased, but the media in general often presents one shallow understanding of an issue, which I think is the case here.

I'm with everyone else: he's done so much for his fans in the past and he's been one of the first big name artists to experiment with different pricing options. I don't find it too outrageous for him to ask us to pay for a record he's really proud of.

This man is an artist who takes his work seriously. He puts everything he has into his career, countless man hours to bring us these products. Hack art school students get paid $200+ for abstract, one tone colour pieces; I think Trent Reznor deserves $10 for his best work in years.

late to the party, but i had to point something out - none of the people who mention the slip being released for free ever mention that it was the only album he gave away (ghosts was pay-what-you-can). whatever you think of the album, the fact is that he gave the fans a gift. so it is not at all hypocritical for him to want to get paid for this one, and not at all a commentary on the quality of the slip. I know it's sputnik and I should anticipate idiots, but this was overload
