People talk shit on BTBAM because the majority of their fans are IDIOTS who feel that if anybody else isn't sucking the band's dick then they must be flat out wrong and just haters. This produces hilarious arguments where idiots (sputnikers) go "NO WAY MAN LIKE THE GUITARIST IS NUTS" in rebuttal to arguments about how poorly structured their songs are.

All of my 5s are atrocious? Are you sure you're not just seeing the Aiden albums I 5'ved as a joke for Enrique?

Like, bro, if you think Anomie is atrocious, I'm gonna have to fight you.

But I was kind of teaching a lesson/trolling simultaneously, though I think they really could work on the structuring of their songs, what with how much that hurt Colors and The Great Misdirect in my opinion.

They definitely did on TGM, but I still think it's like, lolwtf guys?

Like I just don't get it.

Prayer For Cleansing and Glass Casket are/were both bands that structured their songs extremely well, it just seems like with BTBAM they're trying to overdue the "progressive" thing too much now.

That and trying to re-create the accident that was The Silent Circus.

TGM is good, but it seems lazier than Colors. Swim To The Moon was meant to be ambitious but it's far more droning than anything (though there are plenty of pockets of sheer brilliance within that song).

Used to be my favorite band, but I've been much more on board with Radiohead and Thrice lately.

their schtick is that their idea of "progressive" music is throwing forced wacky genres into the middle of their poorly constructed songs. it doesn't help that they have to constantly fall back on their boring and unoriginal metalcore roots once the solo or the break is over. and their songwriting doesn't really seem to be improving all that much, except for Desert of Song.

don't get me wrong, they used to be one of my favorite bands back in the day, but they are really starting to get pretty tiresome.

I love having all those genres in one band. It mixes things up, and I love damn near anything musical, so it's refreshing to hear something besides the same sound track to track. It's why bands like letlive and Glassjaw are so high on my favorites list.

what I think is unfair is no other band really gets put under the knife in writing styles as much as btbam does. [2]

it's also unfair that clearly less-talented and less-creative bands are gaining a lot of positive comments while BTBAM is sinking into this slum of negativity.

i love how people try to belittle a band like BTBAM to create a fisade of being more musically inclined than everyone else. i know people have different tastes but if progressive-metal is a genre you like then how could you honestly say that BTBAM is not refreshingly original and technically more advanced than 99% of all the other bands in the genre. i'll be the first to say that i don't know anything about song structure but as an undergrad at Cal-Berkley, I have friends that are Jazz majors here(the toughest style of music of compose and comprehend) and they both say that BTBAM and Dillinger Escape Plan are by FAR the most technically advanced bands out there. so unless you have some sort of credentials, don 't throw off on their style because you probably just don't know what you're listening to..

i love how people try to belittle a band like BTBAM to create a fisade of being more musically inclined than everyone else.

First of all, it's facade. Second of all, people are allowed to dislike something and critique their songwriting without pretending to be more musically inclined than others.

i know people have different tastes but if progressive-metal is a genre you like then how could you honestly say that BTBAM is not refreshingly original and technically more advanced than 99% of all the other bands in the genre.

Because BTBAM has been rewriting The Silent Circus juxtaposed with silly out of genre moments for almost a decade now?

i'll be the first to say that i don't know anything about song structure but as an undergrad at Cal-Berkley, I have friends that are Jazz majors here(the toughest style of music of compose and comprehend) and they both say that BTBAM and Dillinger Escape Plan are by FAR the most technically advanced bands out there.

And they're jazz majors? And they think DEP and BTBAM are more technical than classical music? Really?

Also, technical playing has nothing to do with song structure.

so unless you have some sort of credentials, don 't throw off on their style because you probably just don't know what you're listening to..

I don't know theory, but I know when a song stops flowing and goes into a shitty square dance part.

BtBaM are hardly the most technical or talented band out there. I enjoy them on occasion, but honestly, they're not all that good. Most of the songs don't flow well. It has nothing to do with poor song -structure- and everything to do with crappy transitions that leave riffs feeling lifeless and empty. Even the quirky out of genre moments would be massively helped by a nice dose of songwriting skill, and more true variation in writing style. Most songs now are death metal, solo, death metal, solo, interlude, solo, solo, solo, solo, solo, solo, death metal, wacky crap, solo, death metal. A better mix of other genres than just wacky crap every now and then would make their music so much more interesting and give something to hold onto to make songs memorable.

Also, did TGM sound just like Colors to anyone else? With less charm and more structure?

Well good luck with your art major. If you are an abstract-expressionist, I might be interested in your work. And it's fair to criticize my grammar but to my defense, it was 3 in the morning and I wasn't really writing to impress anyone. My whole point was to just call people out on their pompous attitudes towards popular bands such as BTBAM. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but to say BTBAM is talentless, considering the audience on sputnik, is either an attempt to troll or possibly a ploy to appear somewhat more musically-inclined than everyone else. My final comment of BTBAM is while there were shining moments in TGM, it was a disappointment relative to the masterpieces they created. I honestly hope the EP has a completely new sound, hopefully having influences from Jazz and Classical music.
