In my opinion (yeah see what I did there) Deftones have been more relevant because in the last 15 years, they have released albums that I want to listen to rather than Metallica's last 4 LP's which are a woeful attempt at trying to hang onto their glories of the 80's.

Yes the criteria I am using is my opinion, I have said that. Like I give a shit if a Metallica album goes Platinum in a day... or if they sell out a concert in 10 seconds. All it means is that lots of people like them and they have a fairly mainstream appeal, not that they are particularly good.
Pleanty of artists come along and sell a shitload of albums and get a stack of publicity but make rubbish music.
