There Will Be Fireworks – “River”

Singing loud enough to wake the dead, not enough now that you’ve left

There’s a lot of factors that go into making great music, and too often I believe we focus on the wrong things.  Intricacy and technical prowess can only get you so far; the best bands in the world aren’t the ones that shred the fastest, create the most complex drum fills, or experiment the farthest with electronics.  They’re the ones that can tap into our human side and appeal to our vulnerability, to serve as a reminder that we’re not alone in our experiences – whatever they may be.  Only a few bands have “it”, and There Will Be Fireworks are one of them.

For proof I’m going to look no further than “River”, the second track on the group’s surprisingly underground The Dark, The Bright – an album that deserved all of the acclaim in the world and for some reason got ignored.  “River” is not a track you can easily shake after hearing it once: it comes rushing in on the heels of “And Our Hearts Did Beat”, and you can immediately tell that the song can’t wait to explode. And it doesn’t take very long to indulge, either – just after the 1 minute mark, singer Nicky McManus belts out, “We used to talk, you used to have me round…I used to sing for you” and you can feel the desperation dripping from every word.  From that moment on, he pretty much shouts every word – somehow becoming even more poignant with every new verse, every additional refrain.  It’s the kind of moment capable of defining a song, album, or even an entire band – the point where the fulcrum tips from dejected croons to simply not giving a fuck anymore, screaming the pain out just to eject it from your mind and body…a cleansing.

That’s what “River” is, too – this powerful, sweeping, cathartic moment capable of rendering one speechless.  It’s not because of the guitars or drums alone, nor McManus’ vocals (although they’re a big part of it) – it’s the raw sincerity behind it all that drives every aspect of the track to excellence.  Not all emotional musical is believable, but the whole of The Dark, The Bright is undeniable.  The best artists have heart – and that’s something that shines through in spades on “River.”

Legit just finally had a real listen of this last night and have been jamming it non-stop. Just commented on the review thread too. Weird coincidence!
This song really is phenomenal. Unfortunately for me, the rest of the album doesn’t quite live up to it. Not to say the rest of the album is bad, it’s quite great! But the opening track and “River” set the bar so high.

It's a good start, Sowing, but you really just need to add tracks 5-12 of this record in total to the list to give it its due.

lol that would be an easy way to jump up to #52, at least

Sweet, another follower. That's part of my goal with these posts so every time someone reports discovering said track for the first time, I get a warm fuzzy feeling.

YES. I'm so happy you fell in love with this band. Honestly this song is probably top 10, maybe top 5 all time for me.

(but also the album title is The Dark, Dark Bright not The Dark, The Bright)

Yeah I got into these guys when I was making my Sputnik Indie Romance/Chick Flick soundtrack and taking recs from random users. I forget who rec'd this song but yeah I fell in love immediately with both the song and the entire album. Still need to check the album before this one though.

Project

idk Twilight Sad's latest was okay but had nowhere near the staying power of this album for me. 10 Good Reasons for Modern Drugs though, that was a killer track

Sinternet

haven't heard their latest but nobody wants to be here is one of the best indie rock albums of the decade

Great track from an amazing record. The album before this one great also. They really perfected a lot of what they were going for on their first one on The Dark, Dark Bright, and their debut has some weaker moments, but the passion is definitely there, especially vocally. Definitely worth it if you don't mind the recording being a big more raw!

The EP is also an incredible middle for both this album and their first, and contains some of their best moments. And it's also worth checking out the little live sessions they did for some of the tracks on this album years before. I could go on about these guys for a while.

And finally their cover of Flirted With You All My Life is absolutely breathtaking and is well, well worth a listen if you want to feel things.

But yeah, incredible band.

Best album of the decade, literally any track is the right choice

Project

that record is a hard 5/5 yeah, but River still stands out. I love so many songs on that record but there's nothing like it

I very clearly remember the first time I heard this song. It absolutely stopped me in my tracks.
