I missed the boat on the staff-wide feature thanks in part to a hectic work week, a desire not to cut-paste from my track reviews, and general laziness.  In retrospect, that turned out pretty awesome (thanks in a large part to Jom’s orchestration of the feature) so I’ll have to do better and contribute to the Q2 playlist.   But for now, I’d just like to get my favorite 10 songs from Jan.-Mar. 2017 out there for your consumption.  I’d consider them all to be essential listens if you stay current week-to-week, especially in the indie-rock / indie-folk scene.   I tend to be long-winded with everything I do, so below each track/artwork I’ve included 3 simple notions that represent feelings, memories, or lyrics I associate with experiencing that particular piece.  Anyway, without further ado, here are my top 10 tracks of the year’s first quarter.

I realize how this makes me look on the heels of the staff feature, not trying to seem too good for that. Just kind of spaced out on that opportunity and had ample/excess time to do this now. Feel free to tell me my list is shit, and then to subsequently make audible sounds out loud indicating that you find the notion of butts hilarious.

Nah list is ok Sow. If I had to chose 10 Q1 songs from this year they would have been radically different, but that again, isn't that the soul of Sput?

Fleet Foxes > Alt-J track, both great anyways... Been loving your staff posts.

None of this's my cup of tea, but you're doing a great work Sowing

I didn't listen to Lorde nor Mastodon thought

not a single banger wtf

every track lorde releases is a bona fide banger

she has written a cumulative 1 banger tbh

true she's no Chelsea Wolfe

7 is such a bad song.

Have you heard the new Portugal. the Man tune sowing?! It's hands down my favorite track of the year so far. So good.....

"7 is such a bad song"
Have to hard disagree. It's probably the most socially and politically relevant song on that album, and it really hit me straight in the gut.

"Have you heard the new Portugal. the Man tune"
No, will have to check it.

i just dislike it musically, and the lyrics were a little too on the nose for me

Musically it's def not the most exciting, but I feel the opposite way about the lyrics. Covers so much of the anxiety surrounding the '16 elections, and in a broader scope American society.

"There's a lynching in the square
You will have to join us"

Hit me square in the gut. Something about the way he sings "you will have to join us" depicts this futuristic fascist regime in which we're forced to partake in awful rituals, something that, as outlined lyrically later in the song, could have been easily avoided.

"And oh we had so much time"

"Blame misinformation
Misguided leaders
Apathetic hesitation
Uneducated readers
For whatever reason
We now find ourselves in this
We are all charged with treason"

Like damn. Scary that the prospect of these lyrics isn't some terrible far-off fiction and closer to a possible reality.

check out portugal. the man already sowingggg

@JWT - eh. it was nice, fun, and short, but didn't strike me as anything particularly great...would probably be worth a download for me to add to my 2017 shuffle but unfortunately doesn't sniff my top 10. thanks for the rec though =) still excited to check their upcoming record!

also, @JWT - I like this new Portugal. The Man song better, even though technically it's from 2016:

This one is so damn fun. Had I heard it in 2016 instead of the beginning of 2017, I easily would have added it to my year end awards feature.

Captain Civic
I like the Listen if you like: info, since searching for new music can be hard sometimes.

God damn love that Vancouver Sleep Clinic song, thanks for singling that out Sowing.

Where's Weezer?

The Worst Crime is so good.

Appreciated the list .. 'Fill it Still' is a great summer banger, I know it's nothing ground breaking, but i can see me remembering it some years in the future, it's really fun.

That Fleet Foxes album cover is incredible.

My man! Looking good!

Nice choices but in cold blood its a way better than 3ww

mastadon hard hits on the drums

Wow #4 sounds exactly like Bon Iver.

Love the list, not really enamored with the association between music and business-time.
