User Spotlight #6: ScuroFantasma

Greetings fellow users! As some of you are aware, I’ve started a little user review competition in which the winner receives an automatic feature, as well as a “user spotlight” session. It basically consists of an informal chat in which I ask some personal questions as well as some silly ones.

This week’s winner was user ScuroFantasma for reviewing Usurpress – The Regal Tribe (here)

First question, something I’ve wondered for a bit: what’re the origins for your username ScuroFantasma?

Well at the time I joined Sput I was really enjoying Ghost’s debut album, it was actually the first album I reviewed too, and I took the ‘scuro’ part from the Italian lyrics on ‘Con Clavi Con Dio’ for no other reason that it sounded cool to me. I’m not entirely sure where I stole the Fantasma part from (I do not speak Italian haha) but there’s something ironic about a ‘black ghost’ that appealed to me so I went with it.

That’s a pretty awesome way to get a username, and I’ve noticed how much you love Ghost. You seem to be the ultimate authority on Swedish metal on sput, given your ratings and reviews. Would you consider them your favorite new metal band? How’d you first hear about them?

I hadn’t even noticed until you pointed it out but I suppose I have listened to a lot of Swedish artists. I stumbled upon Ghost pretty randomly and at a point where I was only just starting to branch out a bit. I think I just clicked on their album on iTunes or something and heard ‘Ritual’, and for a few days after that i kept listening to that one song until I caved and bought the whole thing. For a while I wasn’t even sure I liked them but there was something about their music that really appealed to me. But yeah they’ve definitely made their mark, perhaps not my favourite newer metal band, but they’re up there.

There is something about them that’s pretty addicting, and their whole image is pretty hilarious and refreshing. I find it annoying that sites like Ultimate-Guitar are posting articles exposing the band members, like they’re defeating the whole purpose of the mystique. I mean look what’s happened to bands like Slipknot and others who get unmasked…

I agree, the band has a good sense of humour that’s a bit under-appreciated or ignored sometimes. The unmasking thing ruins the fun a little bit and I like the suspense of belief, but in the long run I don’t think it’s that big a deal and it’s inevitable that the mystery invites challenge.

That’s true, and I think they change members so that’s a good way to throw everyone off. The music can’t be that hard for a new member to learn, I remember reading that Dave Grohl played live with them before. Do you play any instruments?

I have my suspicions that Mr. Grohl is more involved in that band than we’re led to believe. My main instrument is the spoons but I’m yet to master them so I usually play guitar instead.

Nice, I’m partial to the electric triangle myself but have been teaching myself guitar and can fake some Megadeth solos immaculately now. I’ll be the next Yngwie Malmsteen in no time.

I much prefer the Square. It’s on the level 😉. Yngwie is a great goal to have, I especially love his philosophy: “how can less be more…? More is more”.

True that, and it shows with his music that’s for sure. I’ve noticed that you’ve made a lot of site edits, and your record of reviews is impressive. Are there any ideas for the site you’ve had brewing, or users you think deserve more attention? All hypothetical of course.

Why thank you. I recently thought it would be cool to have a “now listening” section on the front page, where you could briefly state a song or album you’re listening to, maybe add a YouTube link or something and it would cycle through submissions so you’d have the option of letting the songs play in the background while you browse. Pretty sure that’s never going to happen though. There’s definitely some users I think need more attention, foremost is Archelirion for his great reviews, and Sevengill makes some awesome atmospheric black metal. Those two come to mind pretty quickly but there’s plenty of other Sputter’s doing interesting things.

That’d be an interesting idea, reminds me of the last.fm integration we used to have on our profiles before that site sort of imploded the way it did. You seem pretty up to date on new releases, including user-made projects. Any upcoming albums you’re stoked for that the site should be anticipating?

Yes kind of like the Last FM feature but more public. I’m pretty excited personally for the new Korn album but many won’t share that excitement, so otherwise I’m looking forward to the new Darkthrone album, the single was great. Vader, Testament, Meshugah and Metallica’s upcoming albums should also be interesting.

Solid picks, this has been an amazing couple of years for music. I’m guessing Meloria is your AOTY?

It was last year but if it tries really hard it might do it again! But yes is sure has been a great decade of music so far, this year my favourite albums have been Borknagar- Winter Thrice, Hyperion – Seraphical Euphony, and The Infernal Sea – The Great Mortality. Though that might change, and the Usurpress album is in with a chance.

Sorry meant to say decade, you actually read my mind it seems. Those picks are a mouthful to say haha.

Ooh, of the decade I’d have to give it to Green Novice – Padabesi. A little band from Latvia who have made one of my absolute favorite albums. I mention them way too often but they definitely need more attention. I agree those are quite difficult band and album name combos aren’t they? But hey, only one Swedish group so I’m doing okay with the diversity.

Agreed, so much great Swedish metal out there. Speaking of which, last question-do you think that Opeth will ever go metal again in our lifetime?!

I doubt they’ll ever do another album like Black Water Park again, but I see the possibility of them at least making their prog-rock style a little bit heavier, they’ve moved slightly further in that direction with Sorceress so who knows, maybe they’ll surprise us.

Very possible, we can only hope. Thanks for playing and congrats again on winning!
