How bad does a song have to be to get rejected from a free-to-download tribute album?  Listen to Thursday’s cover of Bad Religion’s  “Generator” and decide for yourself.

While Geoff Rickley & co. manage to redeem themselves ever so slightly in the song’s straightforward second half, it’s no small feat how the first half of the track turns a punk classic into a bunch of moaned gibberish. Listening to the first half of the song had me thinking that it might be the worst thing I’ve heard all year, and I just finished listening to a song by Clown from Slipknot’s side-project. How’s that for context?

If you think I’m being hyperbolic you obviously haven’t heard the cover, so click the play button and decide for yourself

Your ears not bleed out? Why not listen to the original in it’s un-neutered glory.

I can't understand their reasoning behind those choices. Why do this to the song?

Satellite

i almost submitted this as news earlier.

probably one of the worst covers i've ever heard. it's pretty obvious why this didn't make the tribute album.

Spec

Bad Religion isn't very good anyways.

Tyler

especially when you're just going to abandon what you're trying to do a minute in

Tyler

bad religion is awesome shut up dude. Generator is an incredible song, and they've got a few classic album. Suffer, Process of Belief, Grey Matter are all awesome.

Tyler
01.19.11
and yeah I was gonna do it as news earlier but then I decided I had to rip the track and let you guys hear how bad it is. I figured this was easier since most people are too lazy to click on a link in a news post.

(triple post? maybe?)

goddamnit you are dumb sometimes spec.

i'm a big fan of the more editorial blog posts like this. they seem to be more frequent lately, but maybe that's just me.

Spec

Still don't like 'em.

i actually sorta like Thursday more than Bad Religion... like both bands tho... but yea this cover is pretty bad

Tyler
01.19.11
It's not just you Satellite. We're making a concerted effort right now.

Because I'm interning at another publication right now it means I'm basically thinking 24/7 so I've got a lot more to say than usual. Stuff I don't have the time to cover there will probably end up here and vice-versa.

I really like Thursday, but that cover was just....wow.....that was painful

01.19.11
it's really hard to do a cover well. usually a band does it cause theyre stoked to do it, not to make anyone go "wow, this is a great cover".

so yea I don't care, bad covers happen every day

Tyler
01.19.11
bad covers happen every day but this is a cover by a major, successful band that was so bad they didn't even include it on a FREE compilation.

Kiran
01.19.11
might just be the worst cover ever. def checking out the compilation though.

Ugh... why Thursday, why?!

astrel
01.19.11
Why not just make it energetic all the way through? They were trying to go all Envy on the song and it sounds stupid.

Aids
01.19.11
I really don't like Thursday. and this is just a really bad cover. what a dumb band.

Thursday's always been pretty god tier but this made me cringe

01.19.11
If they stuck to one style choice it might (might) have worked. But nope!

01.19.11
woooow that was depressing
i love thursday but shit

dcha
01.19.11
Bad Religion is shit anyways.

So it begins. This means that LP6 is coming soon.

Awful. Love the Tegan and Sara song, though.

Holy crap...a b-side to a free compilation. My goodness, Thursday, how'd you wreck that so badly? And for one of the absolute best songs BR has ever done out of the something-like 250 songs they've ever done...

Oh, well. At least you have the original there...(and now, obligatory all-caps lyric posting)

THERE'S A HAMMER BY THE WINDOW
THERE'S A KNIFE ON THE FLOOR
LIKE TURBINES IN DARKNESS
LIKE THE BLOOD ON MY DOOR...

IT'S THE GENERATOR!

Bad Religion owns. Can't believe people are saying they aren't. Have they gone mad! And that cover is atrocious, thankfully it got rejected, but it still lives.:(

ShadowAmI
01.20.11
wow, the band members dont even seem to be in sync with eachother.

Dev518
01.20.11
I love both of these bands so I would have thought that this was a good thing :/

foreverendeared
01.20.11
I'm guessing if they had made it sound exactly like the original, you guys would be exclaiming how great it is.

Tyler
01.20.11
you're missing the point.

foreverendeared
01.20.11
No, I just have a different opinion on the cover, I think it's well done. If the entire song was like the second half, it wouldn't be very good.

Captain North
01.20.11
I actually didn't mind the first half - the second half was the shitty bit and made no sense considering how they approached the first.

Awesomesauce
01.20.11
This is a... This is a black day for baseball, folks.

Satellite
01.20.11
Oh man, best Simpsons reference ever.

Kiran
01.20.11
everything about the first half of this cover is embarrassing

lookatthatparkinglot
01.20.11
holy shit, i didn't think it was that bad until it picked up...and then wow, you were right, this is absolutely terrible

crowing51
01.20.11
If they kept the whole song like the second half it would have been a pretty good cover. The beginning pretty much destroyed the song an made you think you were listen to some shitty Coldplay song. I mean they did not even put in the solo like wtf.

pizzamachine
01.20.11
Crap crap crap.

StrizzMatik
01.20.11
Why the fuck does Geoff insist on using horrible vocal effects? Or is it the same shitty producer that did their last two records? Either way, being a fan of both bands this just reeks of shit

Defeater
01.20.11
thursday's last album was actually pretty good strizz

TheyTookErrJobs
01.21.11
I love Thursday, but seriously this is the shittest thing ever

StrizzMatik

Common Existence is good. Just nowhere as good as WATT or Full Collapse, and despite the music being good the production on CE and ACBTLD is godfuckingawful

Rev

I had no idea Guttermouth was still a band

amanwithahammer
01.22.11
Does every punk rock song ever made have the same drumming? Legit question.
