You're one of those that thinks 1991 is old scool black metal. Take a listen to stuff from the early 80s and that's what their new material is inspired by. True old school raw metal.

Outside of the teenager sputnik userbase it really wasn't all that criticized.

Not really. I listen to Celtic Frost, Mercyful Fate, and Bathory. All black metal bands from the 80's.

New Darkthrone is awesome, if you know anything about these guys influences you would know that they are into the whole old school thrash sound more than black metal anyway. Shit, I am sure there are enough Darkthrone clone bands out there too keep all the people moaning over the new stuff happy.
