Japan To Ban File-Sharers

2008-03-16 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 16 Comments
Japanese ISPs have announced plans to begin disconnecting customers who use the internet to trade music illegally.

According to TorrentFreak.com, the move has come independently of any government legislation, such as the kind that has been proposed in the United Kingdom and France, and has come on the back of pressure by the country's major record and movie lobbies.

The system will come into action in April. Infringers will receive a warning for a first offence, and repeat offenders will be permanently cut off.

Why haven't they done this in the US? Seems like it'd be easier than suing everyone.

People will find different ways. Clear development:

From Napster to Gnutella, to eDonkey, to BitTorrent to RapidShare and Co.

There will be an alternative. All the time. Something like an "internet ban" will not change anything about that. Not at all. This Message Edited On 03.17.08

What about the 10% or so of people who actually use file sharing technology for legal purposes?

^ Yeah, what about people who use torrents to get fan recorded live shows and stuff like that? Sucks for them I guess.

There is no way the RIAA or anyone else is ever going to be able to stop people downloading music. The sooner they realize that the sooner they can start planning their own future and business.

I'm not saying we should do this, I'm just wondering why they haven't.
