Casey Calvert: Cause Of Death

2007-12-17 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 24 Comments
As a prelude to this story, we'd like to remind everybody that there is no evidence to indicate that Casey Calvert abused drugs, and that any comments that are in bad taste will be punished by a lifetime ban without exception or right to appeal.

An autopsy report released today has confirmed that Hawthorne Heights guitarist Casey Calvert died as a result of "acute combined effects of opiate, citalopram and clonazepam intoxication."

Calvert had battled depression for some time, and had been prescribed a variety of medical treatments. It appears that these medications, taken in tandem with an unnamed opiate, led to an accidental case of suffocation due to the involuntary closure of his airways. It has been suggested by the band that the opiate in question was the painkiller Vicodin, which the band members speculated in a statement had been prescribed to him following a dental procedure.

Reads the statement: "From the time of the incident, we suspected a possible drug interaction as the cause. Casey wrestled with depression for as long as we knew him. He saw numerous doctors and took an ever-changing array of medicines to get better. He finally had his depression under control."

The band members were also careful to point that there was no indication that Calvert had been abusing drugs intentionally. "According to the toxicology report, the cause of death was due to a fatal interaction between depression meds, anxiety meds and an opiate ... Opiates being mentioned along with the term 'substance abuse,' coupled with 'rock star' stereotypes immediately conjure up images of hard drug use and addiction, which simply couldn't be further from the truth in Casey's instance."

"What the toxicology report doesn't show is that prior to us leaving for tour, Casey had a root canal and was prescribed Vicodin for the pain. Once again, Casey was not involved in anything illegal, nor was he a substance abuser."

Calvert was found dead in the band's tour bus on November 29, 2007. He was 26.

Not good. I heard Vicodin is a mess.

but he didn't overdose, it was just a fatal combination?

Yeah, it sounds as tho it was the combo of meds. It's not always the drug taken, but what's taken with it.

Man you'd think they would've checked to see what else he was taking before giving him vicodin, especially if it could have a fatal reaction. That's really unfortunate though.

Note to self: check what my depression meds are before taking pain meds. God, what an awful way to go - by easily avoidable accident.
Always sucks to see a musician die, especially at a young age. R.I.P.

just goes to show that no matter how much someone's living their dream, they can still suffer from depression. such a tragic accident. R.I.P.

still, isn't vicodin a bit much for a dental proceedure? i've had several teeth removed and one veneer to repair a chipped tooth, and just normal novocaine did the job...

Dying like this... is just wrong. It couldn't have been something like real deadly, cancer, heart attack, something that would be a strong cause of death. Dying for an accidental mix of meds when it wasn't even an overdose has got to suck in every possible way.

(Dying in general sucks, but you know what I mean.)

RIP

Nothing really sounds so 'accidental' about his death, as unfortunate as it is. I hope for the family's sake that it truly was accidental.

I never saw the purpose of taking medications for depression or anything in general. Still, it's sad to see a good hearted person go so early.

Seriously, vicodin is not stuff to mess with. It's so easy to get too - you get surgery and your doctor will prescribe you far more than you need.

Alright, I really am not a huge fan of HH, but I'll have to admit, this guy was a great guitarist. Although their music wasn't my cup of tea, he still was a human being and I respect him. My regards to his family, friends, and of course, Hawthorne Heights.
