Hard RIP. Terrible news.
|
| |
Rest easy, Brent.
All prayers to his friends and relatives.
|
| |
This might be a cheesy as fuck comment, but I hope this tragic event will fuel the remaining members' fire to bounce back triumphantly with a new record
|
| |
Such a hard loss given all of the circumstances around it. I feel for the remaining members and Brent's family. He died at a very vulnerable/bad mental state but he left a timeless legacy. RIP
|
| |
Crazy that it happened in the midst of all those other headlines.
Tragic.
|
| |
This fucking sucks, big RIP, Brent.
|
| |
I don’t like this one at all. RIP to a legend.
|
| |
Rip dude, thank you for all the sweet sweet riffs
|
| |
WHAT THE FUCK?! Poor guy was clearly suffering from substance abuse issues and man, that hits close. RIP Brent.
|
| |
51. He was a fucking kid.
RIP Brent
|
| |
51. He was a fucking kid. [2]
RIP legend. Thank you for the music, memories and good times
|
| |
Huge RIP and I wish the band all the strength to come back even stronger if they can. This one hits too close my friends.
|
| |
RIP. Terrible news.
|
| |
This is a rough one. So sad. RIP Brent. Thank you for everything man.
|
| |
Fucking RIP man
|
| |
Damn double post, gonna jam remission
|
| |
One of my favorite musicians, period. This one hurts. RIP
|
| |
no way wtf
|
| |
Absolutely massive loss. For this to happen in the midst of all his inner turmoil makes it even more tragic.
I shed a tear over Ozzy but this news legitimately broke me down today. RIP Brent, you are a legend.
|
| |
This wasn’t the way the story was supposed to end.
RIP
|
| |
This came out of nowhere wtf, RIP.
I wish that he and the rest of the band were able to reconcile but I doubt that had happened unfortunately.
|
| |
I’m not even a massive Mastodon fan, and this really hurt to read given all the prior circumstances. So so sad
|
| |
Such a shitty way to go too. Huge RIP
|
| |
What nash said. The context of the last month or so makes this even shittier. RIP hard
|
| |
Tragedy
|
| |
RIP
|
| |
Hard rip.
|
| |
horrible, may he rest in peace
|
| |
Its so sad that he died angry and raging at his bandmates
|
| |
this one is absolutely shocking. hard RIP
|
| |
This wasn’t the way the story was supposed to end. [2]
I dunno man. This is the hardest I've ever taken a musician's death. Today was just...cold inside. It aches.
I think I would be happy if Mastodon retired the name. They won't, because it's a big money machine with contractual obligations and full-time staff and stuff, but I won't recognize it anymore.
|
| |
Yeah. The fact that he died mad at them. The fact that they will never get to make amends. Imagine suddenly kicking a longtime friend out of your band and all the negative shit that goes with that, and then they die a super untimely, violent death later that year. The last memory they will have of interacting with someone they grew up with and loved like a brother for a lifetime will be a complete fallout. Absolutely gut wrenching shit
|
| |
This is unbelievable what is happening, great musicians are leaving us, a terrible year... R.I.P. Brent
|
| |
Oh no. This is horrible.
|
| |
Such a tragic loss, man! R.I.P.
|
| |
Crazy how you can be so tight with someone for so long, and then....
|
| |
Mega RIP, honeslty didn’t believe it at first, horrible timing a massive blow, dude was one of the best parts of Mastodon and it really sucks how everything panned out.
|
| |
Usurp the Skye, Brent. Gone too soon. Rest in Power.
|
| |
Naked Burn
|
| |
RIP
|
| |
I think what will haunt the rest of the band forever is the fact they are on tour.. and if Brent had been with him, this could have been avoided. Extremely sad
|
| |
Damn I didn’t even realize they were still on tour. I saw them all the way back last fall with lamb of god.
|
| |
damn, will spin crack the skye in his honor. dude might have been off the rails lately but damn sure he was a god damn riff lord with a charismatic voice. RIP
|
| |
Devastating news. One of my favourite guitarists and one of the coolest musicians I've ever seen live. Some of the best solos of the last 25 years from his hands. Hard RIP. Blaring Oblivion in his honor
|
| |
Sad is the only word for it, the past few months to now. What an unbelievable loss for the whole community.
|
| |
Such a hard loss given all of the circumstances around it. I feel for the remaining members and Brent's family. He died at a very vulnerable/bad mental state but he left a timeless legacy. RIP [2]
|
| |
I think everything that should've been said here has already been said here.
RIP [30]
|
| |
i'm still struggling to believe this one, holy shit. surreal. RIP brett
|
| |
R.I.P.
|
| |
meet him doing concert with mastodon at Milano back in 2008. at that time Kelliher was hospitalized and perform with Mastodon as a trio.
Rest in Peace
|
| |
"Our music didn't cause tension — it solved problems. I'm a very lucky man to have three other really talented men who are understanding, compassionate, loving, funny, enduring, and super kind." - Brent, 2015
|
| |
Terrible note to end on.
Rock in paradise (not metal)
|
| |
Really awful news. Spun Crack The Skye last night on vinyl in tribute; the man truly was a riff machine and incredibly talented guitarist. Take care and rest easy, buddy.
|
| |
Crack the Skye and Leviathan are untouchable but my favourite Brent solos are on Emperor of Sand. I’m so thankful for so much great music. RIP.
|
| |
So sad to see him leave so soon and in such a state of turmoil. RIP to a truly unique and masterful musician.
|
| |
"I think what will haunt the rest of the band forever is the fact they are on tour.. and if Brent had been with him, this could have been avoided."
If it does, it shouldn’t.
It's extremely tragic, but they're in no way responsible, and would be wrong if they had longstanding guilt.
Rest in peace, Brent.
|
| |
moot point, voluntarily left band bc he genuinely hated his bandmates, or at least thought he did. Mental struggles will turn friends into enemies, it happens. Hope he found some peace in the afterlife
|
| |
It was not the rest of the band's responsibility to deal with Brett and his regressing mental health. These are just a series of really shitty events that have no direct associations with one another.
|
| |
"This might be a cheesy as fuck comment, but I hope this tragic event will fuel the remaining members' fire to bounce back triumphantly with a new record"
thats not cheesy, thats embarassingly tactless.
rest in peace, legend.
|
| |
Yeah dumbass comment tbh
|
| |
Have to feel for the band, hit a rough patch with Brent, things ended poorly, they probably envisioned making up at a future date, RIP.
|
| |
He may have had his issues (as we all do), but Mastodon without Brent isn't really Mastodon tbh. New music isn't the thing to worry about at the moment.
|
| |
Absolute legend. RIP king. Can't imagine how many young metalheads were born from all those insane riffs.
|
| |
"but Mastodon without Brent isn't really Mastodon tbh" [2]
The echoes of his death is really touching. Have y'all seen Åkerfeldt's post? So sad... I'm not the biggest Mastodon fanboy, but their music had an impact in my early-metalhead-days, and it was because Brent was such an unique guitarist.
|
| |
Yeah man it is heartbreaking. Adam Jones and Norman Reedus were some of the first few who posted tributes but if you go to Mastodon´s public statement on Instagram you´ll find a wealth of artists and musicians on the comment section. Such an influential player, man.
|
| |
R.I.P Brent. What a loss, such a tragedy.
|
| |
Sucks unbelievably bad, fucking RIP.
|
| |
RIP
Had an old friend who died in 2023 that also ended horribly between us, similar to the situation between Brent and the band members. I feel for the guys. It sucks beyond belief.
|
| |
yep my friends older brother was a huge chopper enthusiast and died in conditions basically identical to Brent. it happens in the blink of an eye. you can be doing everything right as a driver and still lose your life because your motorcycle is not winning against 90% of vehicles on the road.
also, I read the driver of the car died too. so they were both going really fast for that to happen I imagine.
|
| |
RIP Brent. I haven't listened to the band much in years, but I still like Crack the Skye.
|
| |
RIP, terrible news....
I was contemplating about a discog run - the naughts albums were the soundtrack of the decade for me - and now I'm gonna do it with a heavy heart...
The mantra I keep repeating to myself, every time I get into a car and drive:
Stay clean! (and that includes alcohol and excessive food consumption)
Drive only in a good mental condition, ideally after a good nap.
Drive as less as possible
Drive as slow as possible
|
| |
RIP.
|
| |
Fuck
|
| |
“Absolutely gut wrenching shit” [2]
Really really awful I still can’t shake it
|
| |
me neither, I've been out of sorts today as well. my least favorite headline I've read on this site and one I wish we didn't have to read.
|
| |
This one hurts

|
| |
@Kinetic22 Thanks for sharing. It’s slightly encouraging to see the band thriving, playing the scheduled shows and honoring Brent along the way. Brann’s speech was very emotive and they clearly had intentions of getting him back in the band eventually according to what he’s saying there.
|
| |
Yeah, the guy's voice is clearly cracking, and you can feel there was still a lot of love there, and that hope that they'd make amends one day. It sucks man, makes you think of the times we fall out with someone because of what at the end of the day is mostly irrelevant shit.
|
| |
Absolutely tragic. I feel so much for the Hinds family especially, considering the loss of Brent's brother in an accident as well. RIP Brent, may you riff forever.
|
| |
This one hit me even harder than Chester. As a fellow rider, one that was riding in Atlanta two weeks ago, it crushed me to the core. My heart goes out to everyone who loved him and every rider who's lived and lost.

Dude seemed actually amazing. Totally didn’t give a fuck. While also caring
He impacted the world. In a huge way. I’m celebrating his life today.

RIP

"I feel so much for the Hinds family especially, considering the loss of Brent's brother in an accident as well."
christ, I forgot about this. that was a big part of The Hunter. I'm shocked I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere until now.

Mastodon were one of the first bands I discovered through Sputnik, way back in 2008, when I was 16. The more I listening I do, the more it hurts.
RIP big dude

very true, well said Hawks.
|
| |
Man Reedus getting matching motorhead tatoos with Hinds the day lemmy died... that hits hard.
|
| |
been on a week long hiking trip in the UK but now that im back this finally fully hits me. time to jam Cold Dark Place a bunch.
|
| |
This one hit pretty hard. Ozzy and Brent back to back is a bitch.
