Kayo Dot Unveil New Single

Massachusetts based avant-garde, experimental, and the world's first and only Liminal Metal band Kayo Dot have released the second single to their upcoming album Every Rock, Every Half-Truth Under Reason titled, "Closet Door in the Room Where She Died".

According to Toby Driver, the song "is a meditation on haunting, not just in the supernatural sense but in the way the past imprints itself on space. The ghost here is not a mere specter but a residue, an event that has left its mark on the house, on the walls, on the very air. The house itself is alive with memories, trapped in a state of suspended time, an echo that will not fade. The ghost watches, trapped in the mirror, unable to escape the house it once inhabited. This ghost is not a solitary figure but part of a larger, more insidious force—the trauma of a past that will not be exorcised. And, like the world we live in, the house is inhabited by the past, the present, and the inescapable blur between them."

Exclusively featuring vocals from Kayo Dot's cloaked lyricist and former maudlin of The Well death growler Jason Byron, the piece contains "a foundation of microtonal organs, layers of clarinets, and violins creat[ing] a dense, suffocating atmosphere, reminiscent of György Ligeti’s work -- where dissonant beauty holds us in place."

If anyone had concerns about Kayo Dot not Kayo Dot'ing anymore, this song addresses that in around 12 seconds.

Also, Byron's vox are hellish.

This popped up on my Spotify late last night and certainly brings the spook. Love Jason’s vocal contribution. Album’s shaping up to be unique as hell. Definitely fits with what Toby Driver said about making “liminal metal”.

Really can't wait to see the full lyrics on this one when they drop with the physical editions because what I've been able to parse is some nightmare fuel.

I’m not high, but when seeing the related reviews of all their recent albums, I noticed the focus (woman’s face, mountain, circle, creatures face?) are all located in roughly the same location. Interesting

Toby is still doing his thing, but neither single has done much for me. Especially after promoting this as a sort of return to Choirs era KD. Maybe in context of the rest of the album these singles make more sense.

He would hate that I say this, I'm sure, but Toby seems to have such a "one for you, one for me" attitude to each song/album/whatever

I don't think he's ever made a song that caters to the audience.

That's why I say he would hate to hear that. I just mean the swings between what's "accessbile" and what isn't is one of the more fascinating things about his catalog to me.

I LOVE everything Toby has done so far except for, maybe, Blasphemy. One of the best musicians in the world right now. Always pushing the boundaries with his magic. Judging by the two singles released I expect to be delighted by another masterpiece of avant-garde/art metal and abstract poetry
