BMTH cover a cover?

2025-01-30 by Nat S. | 26 Comments
British rock/metal heavyweights Bring Me the Horizon have released a cover of Oasis' campfire classic "Wonderwall" as part of Spotify's Singles series, with all proceeds from streaming being donated to the Teenage Cancer Trust. Listen here:

While fans have been enjoying the cover, some keen-eared listeners pointed out its similarities to an earlier metalcore rendition of the song, which was performed by Loner Youth and Todd Barriage and released to the internet in late 2023. To address this, Barriage published a video to his Instagram clarifying that he had spoken to Oliver Sykes and did not feel any bitterness towards BMTH, with Sykes admitting to taking inspiration from Barriage and Loner Youth's cover.

First stealing from Moodring and never admitting to it, now this... I love Bring Me but why do they keep being idiots like that?

"First stealing from Moodring and never admitting to it" tbf I feel like both them and BMTH were deriving from the same source material (aka Deftones) and that one was unintentional

What made these people feel like they should do this?
This is the last thing the world needs right now. Theres enough atrocity is this world as there is

it's literally 2 songs with the same riff. There are tons of bands that do Deftones-esque riffs, but the same riff is the same riff

Cover's not great but now it has me wondering why did they stop putting out those Punk Goes Pop comps, they should revive that shit, I miss my incredibly cheap and tacky metalcore pop covers

ngl i feel like Moodring is just underground enough for there to be a plausible deniability that Oli didn't even know who they are

I mean, there have been weirder/stupider covers out there.

Sleep Token’s ‘Hey Ya’ comes to mind.

@ 1:48, is that riff a straight rip-off of Writing On The Walls?

honestly the most offensive thing about this is that it is a cover of the most inoffensive, overwhatevered song ever. The jam itself sounds like direct copy of the 2000s pop metalcore/post-hardcore sound many of their earlier contemporaries partook in. Probably why I made it a whole two minutes in lol
